The sound attack, while capable of incapacitating anything within a thirty-foot radius of the mobile base, and even dispatching weaker mutated creatures, felt rather lackluster in comparison to conventional weaponry. Caroline couldn’t help but feel a surge of frustration bubbling within her as she prepared to unleash a string of curses. However, just as she was about to vent her anger, a new message flickered into existence at the bottom of the mobile base panel.
With a swift tap, she opened the notification. It read, “Supportive attacks are still attacks.”
A twitch of irritation crossed Caroline’s lips. So, the base had anticipated the complaints and had crafted a preemptive excuse for the feature. How typical.
In a fit of exasperation, she kicked the wall, her voice rising in protest, “Give back my energy! I want to switch to defense! This space system is truly the worst!”
The wall responded with a prolonged “Aaaaahhhh…” that echoed in the confined space, almost mockingly.
Rather than succumbing to anger, Caroline took a deep breath. She reminded herself that she could always venture out, hunt down more mutated creatures, and subsequently upgrade the wall. There were still numerous functions waiting to be unlocked, after all.
What she remained blissfully unaware of was that the feature she had so scornfully dismissed would soon prove to be invaluable. Each morning, any mutated creature that wandered too close to the base would be met with the relentless sound attack, leaving a trail of defeated foes in its wake.
On particularly fortunate days, Caroline would awaken to find a small bounty of dead mutated flies or mosquitoes waiting for her. The feature essentially replenished the mobile base’s energy reserves at no cost, a boon she would come to appreciate immensely.
Fast forward two months, and Caroline had upgraded this system not once, but twice, her initial skepticism transformed into unwavering admiration.
But for now, she was in a different mindset. She had just released most of the animals that Denton and Nelson had captured, keeping only a select few tucked away in her storage space.
With a sense of purpose, she gathered the corpses of the mutated mantises, using her abilities to clean the area meticulously. Once satisfied with her work, she prepared to delve into her storage space.
As she stepped inside, Jasper came bounding towards her, his large, watery eyes wide with concern. “Caroline, that giant fish seems really depressed. Can we eat it?”
Caroline froze in place, her mind racing. Giant fish? The Silver Arowana?
“Depressed? How on earth can a fish be depressed?” she thought, puzzled.
She hurried to the vibrant fish pond, her heart racing. According to Jasper, ever since Marmy had left, the behavior of the ant fish had taken a turn for the bizarre.
