He turned in circles, his gaze sharp but unfocused, as if he sensed danger closing in from every side.
“How many are we talking about? Who’s surrounding us?”
Caroline’s mind raced. Had someone set her up?
Jet flapped his wings frantically, his voice breaking. “They’re not people! They’re animals–like cats, but huge! I’ve never seen anything like them. They’re vicious, with red eyes, big tails, and gray fur that looks hard like metal!”
“There are hundreds of them!”
Jet’s tone shook so much he dropped his usual calm completely.
When Jet told her the creatures were mutants–and that there were hundreds of them–Caroline’s brow furrowed. Still, her mind was already working the numbers. Maybe these things were about to hand her the energy she needed to upgrade her storage space.
The problem was, based on Jet’s description, she couldn’t tell what kind of animals they were.
“Keep sharp. Let’s go check it out,” Caroline said as she gave Raven’s back a firm pat.
The neighborhood was massive, and the creatures had surrounded it completely.
From the way they moved, she could tell they weren’t mindless. They had a touch of intelligence, probably from clashing with humans before. That would explain why they weren’t charging right in.
When she reached the edge of the area, her eyes caught the faint glow of red lights scattered through the darkness. It took her a second to realize those were eyes. Dozens–no, hundreds–of them.
Each creature stood upright, about three feet tall.
As she drew closer, the details came into focus. They were stocky, heavy–bodied animals covered in rough half–length fur. They looked like something between raccoons and dogs. Their fur was grayish brown, their tails thick and short, and the dark patches around their eyes made them look like tiny bandits wearing masks.
“Raccoons,” Caroline murmured.
Memories surfaced–old videos from before the world fell apart. Clips of raccoons invading city neighborhoods, stealing pet food, biting dogs, and even begging for snacks.
Some gated communities had even reported full–on infestations.
They had always been savage little things, strong and quick, nothing like tamed pets.
They were born wild, mean by nature.
They were not household pets.

Chapter 520 Predators
Even back then, a person could feed them one minute and be clawed the next.
Some had even torn apart cats and small dogs.

In her last life, she hadn’t run into any. Maybe there hadn’t been many, or maybe they’d stayed hidden.
Now they were massive–twice their old size. Their fur looked different hardened quills instead of hair.
90, thick and bristled like
As she looked closer, she noticed the fangs. Thick, curved teeth that stuck out past their lips, far larger than anything a raccoon had before.
Their mutations had clearly focused on bite and armor–attack and defense.
Caroline didn’t strike yet. She was already forming her plan.
Then one of the raccoons made a piercing cry, a sound that echoed like a command.
In an instant, the pack exploded into motion.
Hundreds of crimson eyes snapped toward her.
And then they lunged.
Caroline barked her command, her voice sharp. “Go!”
At that exact moment, she unleashed Tyler’s ability.
Tyler’s ability was a miracle when chaos hit on a big scale.
The raccoons came like a tide, snarling and clawing. As they drew close, Raven cast a Gravity Field that smashed a bunch of them flat into the dirt.
Caroline moved in next. The wires in her hands sliced through the air like a harvester’s blade, cutting down a dozen in seconds.
Jet bared his claws and lunged for their
as they chased him, setting three or foes. He struck fast, pulled back, then hurled fireballs at their heels
ablaze in each burst.
The air reeked of blood and smoke. The light of the flames flickered over twisted bodies while the shrieks of dying beasts echoed through the ruined street.
