**Chapter 525: The Military Shows Up**
“I swear, the last time I saw him, he looked like a woman,” one of the men remarked, his voice laced with incredulity.
“His ability must work that way,” another replied, shrugging as if the matter was of little consequence.
Alger stood to the side, confusion knitting his brow. He had no idea what they were talking about, and their furtive glances made him feel increasingly uncomfortable, as though he were an outsider peering into a world he could not comprehend.
Caroline, meanwhile, was blissfully unaware of the undercurrents swirling around her. She guided her horse, Raven, away from the mid-rise building that had served as her temporary refuge. The air was crisp, the sun beginning its descent, casting long shadows across the cracked pavement.
After riding for a few miles, she suddenly halted, a sense of danger prickling at her senses. With a flick of her wrist, an ice blade materialized and flew behind her, slicing through the air with a chilling whoosh.
“You’ve tailed me long enough. Show yourself,” she commanded, her voice steady and unwavering.
From the shadows, five figures emerged, stepping into the fading light. Among them was the thin man who had once bartered information for her precious canned food. But now, he lay crumpled on the ground, his body a canvas of bruises and cuts, evidence of a brutal beating. He looked as if he were teetering on the brink of death.
“This is our gift for you,” one of the men said, his tone dripping with a twisted sense of pride. “We want to talk about a partnership too.”
Caroline’s expression darkened as she remained rooted to the spot, her gaze fixed on the broken figure before her. Thoughts raced through her mind, sharp and jagged like shards of glass.
