Nelson had been staying up late again, buried in his research. His face looked pale and drawn.

Caroline wandered around, finding each of the by–products strangely fascinating.

When she reached her old friend—the golden python–it lifted its head and gave her a lazy glance.

Then it dropped its head again and started curling itself tighter, trying to squeeze deeper into the hole it had just dug to keep soaking up the sun.

Caroline stood quietly for a moment.

Every time she saw that golden python, she got the same uneasy feeling, like any second it might spring up and pick another fight with her.

Seeing it this calm and harmless almost felt surreal.

She stepped closer and tapped the glowing screen above it.

As words appeared, Caroline stared at them, her thoughts immediately filling with complaints.

“That’s enough, you oversized freeloader,” she said through gritted teeth. “You better give me something useful next time, or I swear I’ll set you loose.”

Caroline finally reached the deepest section—the dinosaur egg.

It had been the first mutant creature she ever placed in her storage space, which was why it sat tucked away at the very back.

When she reached the pen, she saw the egg bouncing gently inside, oddly lively and full of

energy.

Caroline hadn’t checked on it in a long time, but now that she did, she realized something shocking–the egg had grown.

Yes, an egg had actually gotten bigger.

What once fit snugly in her arms now needed both of her hands to carry.
