It was already noon. The neighbor who had left a note yesterday saying he’d visit had arrived and was knocking on the door.

But before Caroline could respond, someone else didJet.

When Jet saw that Caroline was awake, he flapped his wings excitedly and shouted, Nobody’s home! Nobody’s home!

Caroline burst out laughing, her sleepiness instantly gone.

She quickly carried the troublemaker back to the bedroom before going to answer the door.

Caroline peeked through the peephole and saw a tall man standing outside.

He had short dark brown hair, a black shirt, broad shoulders, and sharp eyes. He had sunkissed skin, and honestlyhe looked

attractive.

Caroline raised an eyebrow. No way! Could he be that guy?

He was nearly sixfootthree, his waist lean but powerful, every line of his body showing strengthlike a panther.

Unless this building somehow had two men that were perfectly built, this had to be the same guy she’d seen moving supplies in the opposite building.

The one who almost blocked her on the 12th floor.

Her hand, which was already on the doorknob, hesitated and dropped.

Maybe the man had heard her footsteps because his calm voice came through the door. Hello. My name’s Tyler Lowland. I’d like to talk about setting up defenses on our floor against outside threats.”

Caroline lifted an eyebrow. Straight to business, huh?

Defenses? Mr. Lowland, what kind of threats do you think we’re facing?

She asked through the door.

The man didn’t sound the least bit offended by her cold tone. His voice stayed steady, deep, and serious. The apocalypse,he said.

His answer was direct and simple.

Caroline stayed silent for a few seconds before asking again, Mr. Lowland, what exactly do you mean by working together on defenses?

Tyler’s voice remained calm, showing no irritation at all that she still hadn’t opened the door. There are only two occupied apartments on this flooryours and mine. Both are on the east side. We can take the doors from the empty units and use them to block off every entrance and hallway. What do you think?

Caroline found herself interested in his suggestion.

Sealing off the entire hallway with security doorsnow that was a smart defense plan.

In the apocalypse, the scariest thing wasn’t the disaster. It was people.

She was just one young woman with a big, wellfed dog. To others, that made her an the easy targetespecially to guys like Ivor, the thug who’d knocked on her door earlier. People like him would go after her first.

And later, when food got even harder to find, someone was bound to start eyeing Raven too.

Caroline had thought about blocking off her entire floor before.

But she didn’t have enough doors to do it. If she tried alone, it would only send the wrong message. Look, I’m loaded with supplies! That’s why I’m locking everything up!

Now, though, things were different. A new neighbor had moved in.

If they worked together, sealing the hallway would look like teamwork, not a show of wealth.

Still, could she trust a stranger?

Caroline stayed silent for a while, studying the man outside carefully.

Caroline’s eyes narrowed as she spotted ita large patch of raw, decaying skin on the man’s neck.

Parts of it were swollen and red; other areas had already started to rot and peel. That man didn’t even seem to bother with it. There wasn’t a trace of medicine on the injury, no sign he’d tried to treat it at all.

That kind of damage could only come from acid rain.

Everyone knew how deadly it was by now. Hardly anyone dared to step outside anymore.

This level of corrosion didn’t come from a brief exposure. It was the result of long hours under the rainor even walking straight through it. Just like she and Raven had done. Her suspicion deepened.

There was no doubt now. The man in front of her was the same person she’d seen last night, carrying supplies through the storm.

Caroline frowned. Why did he move in right next to me? Was it really just luck, or did he see Raven yesterday and figure out who I am?

While she stayed silent, the man outside waited patiently. He didn’t knock again. He didn’t call out. He just waited.

After a moment, Caroline made up her mind. Whatever this guy’s intentions were, she wasn’t going to act scared.

Give me a second, she said through the door. I’ll get change and come out to talk.

She turned away and quickly got dressedjeans, sweatshirt, sneakers.

All practical and easy to move in. Then, she reached into her storage space, pulled out a dagger, and slipped it behind her back. She also took out a palmsized stun baton and tucked it inside her sleeve.

Before unlocking the door, Caroline leaned toward the peephole for one last look. If you try anything stupid, I’ll zap you first, stab you second, and make sure you never get up again.

Outside, Tyler was just trying to meet his new neighbor. He was completely unaware that the person he was about to greet was armed, cautious, and more dangerous than he could ever imagine.
