Chapter 70 Wolfhound

From the wolfhound’s massive body, Caroline saw at once that it was mutated.

Her pupils shrank. She turned her gaze to the man holding the leash.

She knew him. It was Ivor.

Hey there,Ivor said with a wide grin.

We didn’t get a proper hello last time. I’m Ivor. Fifteenth floor. I’m the one running this place now.

You run it? Who made you the boss?Caroline asked, her lip curling.

Ivor only smiled and scratched the wolfhound’s head. All the neighbors agreed. They picked me.

The bastard’s lying! He’s a piece of shit!

A weak, trembling cry floated up from below.

Caroline leaned over the railing.

It was Freya, the woman from the 65th floor who ran a private home cuisine place.

She looked broken. Her clothes were torn all over.

A button ripped from her skirt. Blood streaked down her arm. She clutched a kitchen knife and stood at the stairwell corner. She pointed the blade at Ivor. You bastard. I’m not letting you get away with this.

Caroline saw her state and knew what had happened.

Ivor brushed it off. He jerked the wolfhound toward her. What’s your deal? People picked me as leader to keep us together. Don’t mess things up.

The wolfhound bared its teeth. It looked ready to shred her apart.

Freya dropped to the floor and sobbed. She hurled curses at Ivor through her tears.

He didn’t care. His eyes roved over her body with filthy hunger.

Then Kay appeared. She grabbed Freya and pulled her to safety, whispering for her to calm down.

Before leaving, Kayspat at Ivor. Hell has a special place for scum like you.”

Ivor let his eyes linger on her figure. His stare was greedy. Come drag me down yourself, sweetheart. I’d like to see you try.”

Caroline understood now. Both women had been attacked.

Her face darkened as she faced Ivor. Do what you want. But don’t cross me. You’ll regret it if you do.”

Raven sensed her anger. He burst out in a thunderous bark.

The sound was sharp. It was fierce and wild.

It was different from his earlier self.

Before, Caroline had told Raven to stay at the door and guard. He had held back.

Now Raven felt her shift. He would not hold back.

The wolfhound that had snarled at him moments ago shrank.

Its ears fell flat. Its tail tucked tight. It dragged Ivor backward as it retreated.

General, sit down!Ivor shouted, yanking the leash.

Raven barked louder, his paws clawing at the railing, ready to strike.

The wolfhound panicked. It bolted down the stairs.

The leash yanked Ivor down with it. He smashed facefirst into the floor.

Blood marked his cheek.

Caroline burst out laughing.

Ivor let the leash slip. The wolfhound vanished down the stairwell.

Caroline laughed harder. She patted Raven’s head when her laughter faded. Alright, boy. I know you’re tough. That’s enough. Don’t waste your bite on weaklings.

Ivor stood up and wiped at his bloody face. He turned on the gawkers below and shouted, What the hell are you looking at? Keep staring and I’ll sic my dog on you.

Caroline watched and scoffed inside. He was nothing but a coward who preyed on the weak.

Ivor’s grin was gone. He stormed up to Caroline, fury in his eyes. Listen to me. I’m the floor leader now. I don’t care if you’ve got a big dog. You’ll do what I say. If not, my boys will deal with you.

She had already seen them. A few tattooed men stood nearby with weapons in their hands. Their stares were sharp and cold.

They were Ivor’s socalled boys. They were his thugs.

Rumors claimed these thugs ran a business with Ivor. The wrong sort of friends these people were.

Caroline let out a short laugh. She gave him no reply. She turned her back and stepped inside her home.

Ivor thought he had scared her off. He puffed his chest and shouted at the crowd.

From now on, every single one of you pays protection. Two pounds of pasta a month, or the same in food. Don’t pay, and you’ll regret it. And the pretty ones, you’ve got other ways to pay. My boys will be happy to collect.”
