After all that drama, it was already noon. Caroline’s stomach was empty, but she wasn’t tired. It was probably thanks to the spring water she’d had last night.

She went home, pulled out a bowl of beef noodles, and slurped them down with an ice–cold orange juice. It was pure heaven.

Jet wouldn’t stop squawking in her ear, whining about how she never took him out anymore.

Honestly, he had changed a lot in the

few days.

First, he could use the toilet by himself now, which made Caroline oddly proud.

And he’d grown a lot too–about the size of a hawk. When he perched on her shoulder, he was heavy.

His claws and beak were sharper now. Caroline touched them, realizing they could do some real damage.

And his voice? It sounded almost human. No more stuttering, and he could spit out harder words with a deep, grown–up tone.

Caroline thought if anyone heard him without seeing him, they’d think it was some tough guy talking.

“Okay, okay, I’ll let you meet a few friends later,” she said, passing Jet a nut.

She’d already figured out nuts were his favorite.

Jet flapped his wings excitedly.

“But rules come first. If you can’t keep it together, you’re not going anywhere with me.” Caroline fixed her eyes on him, wondering if he was sharp enough to catch her meaning.

He could slip in and out of the storage space whenever, and he knew way too many

His eyes gleamed as he circled her.

She raised an eyebrow. Raven was pretty awesome. She’d raised a good dog. He even knew to call the storage space their “secret base“.

But then, she realized something important. Did Jet just say Raven “told” him?

“You and Raven can talk to each other?”

Caroline snatched Jet mid–air, staring into his round little eyes.

“Of course!”

She was thrilled.

Since bringing Raven home, she never truly knew what that dog thought.

Sure, they were close now, but sometimes Raven acted distant. Was he hanging around just because she fed him? Did he even like her?

“So, what else has Raven said?” she asked, patting Jet’s head with a grin. “I’ll set up a nut buffet for you today. You can eat as much as you want!”

When food was involved, Jet caved fast.

“Raven said he loves canned venison and rabbit!”

Caroline already knew that one.

“Raven also said he’ll bite anyone who tries to hurt you!”

She slowly smiled. All that care for Raven was worth it!

“Raven said he likes you the most-”

Before Jet could finish, a black blur flew past, grabbed his wing, and yanked him away.

“Help! Raven said he’s gonna bite me!” Jet screeched as Raven dragged him off.

Caroline just stood there glowing. Raven actually thought she was his favorite!

When things calmed down and everyone had eaten, Caroline slipped into the storage space and pulled out one glass of cow’s milk and one of goat’s milk.

Now, every farm animal was giving her something extra.

Fresh cow’s milk and goat’s milk came in every day.

She drank the cow’s milk herself and split the goat’s milk between Raven and Jet.

She hadn’t expected Jet to drink goat’s milk.

Truth was, she didn’t know much about parrots. Maybe it was because he’d mutated, or maybe parrots just liked milk.

Today, the JunkEater spat out two pairs of down pants.

Caroline checked the sizes. One man’s, one woman’s. She tucked them away for later.

Then, she tossed in two more junk items, planning to check the results tomorrow.

Caroline was starting to think the storage space wasn’t random at all. It was giving her exactly what she’d need next to survive the apocalypse.

From how things looked, the next nightmare would be the deep freeze.

And lately, everything that came out of the storage space was perfect for handling the cold.

By the afternoon, the sky cleared. People who’d just gotten supplies from the government were already daydreaming, convinced life was about to go back to normal.
