Chapter44
Evangelina’s POV
Everything on this end had been going according to plan. It has been about 8 hours and I was able to get quite a few things packed. I had the elders helping out when it came to organization and getting everybody and everything separated into groups of 20. I still have some of my clothes to pack, but my office and bedroom are done.
After I pack the last of my clothes I take the last few boxes to my pile. It is enough for a large trailer. I essentially needed to bring my whole office, minus the furniture and my clothes. I also packed all of our weapons and put them in my pile as well. I am not leaving that stuff here. I look around to see most of my elders standing in their group with their families. The last of the two groups that need to be taken to the
palace.
I walk up to them and can almost feel their nervous energy.
“You all got everything?” I ask, pointing towards the heaping pile of boxes behind them. They turn around nervously and eye the pile.
“Well, yeah. We couldn’t leave the historical items like gremuars and history books. You have gained quite the collection through taking in covens and packs.” Maxwell says, rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly. I chuckle at the notion.
“I understand. I packed all the weapons so my pile is as big as all of yours put together.” I say motioning towards my pile and they all laugh.
“Leave it to you to worry about the weapons.” Leviticus, my elder dragon shifter jokes.
“Well, not all of us have a ginormous fire breathing dragon as a weapon.” I say and raise an eyebrow at him. He laughs and holds up his hands.
“You got me there.” He says. Dalya appears beside the group with elder Esmorelda, both looking absolutely drained. Dalya is my strongest transporter and Esmorelda my strongest witch and seeing them like this gets me worried for how the others are.
“Alpha.” Dalya says out of breath, and looks around. Esmorelda looks at the piles of items worriedly.
“I will try to transport the items, but I may only be able to do this pile and some of that one.” Esmorelda says pointing towards my pile. Her skin is gray and I know that she is pushing herself to her limits.
“Everyone else is passed out or too drained to even walk to transport anything or anyone.” Dalya explains and I nod my head and try to not let the guilt settle on my face.
“Go ahead.” I say motioning to Dalya and she understands. She transports the last group and leaves me with
Esmorelda.
“Transport what you can without completely draining yourself.” I say and she nods her head. I hear the quiet words she says and then the pile of belongings of the elders is gone. She opens her eyes and wavers, I see her skin turn even more gray than it was and I try not to tear up. This is my fault. I steady her so that sh doesn’t fall and look at my pile. She was able to transport half of it. It looks like it was all the weapons. She closes her eyes and begins whispering again, but I interrupt her.

“You’re done, Esmeralda.” I say and she opens her eyes and looks at me then back at the pile.
“But.” She says and I shake my head.
“I said done. It’s fine.” I say and her eyes start to grow watery with tears. Dalya pops back in and looks at
Esmeralda in concern.
“Get her back. I will pack the rest up in one of our trade vans and drive.” I say and Dalya scrunches her
eyebrows. Her pink eyes have lost a lot of their brightness, telling me that she doesn’t have much power left.
Not that her pale skin wasn’t any indication.
“Alpha, you can’t drive alone.” She says as Esmeralda passes out and I catch her. I then give Esmerelda to Dalya.
“Get her home now. Don’t worry about me. Just go. She needs to be taken care of.” I say and she nods her head, the last thing I see before she leaves is a tear rolling down her face.
I turn to look around. This place is a ghost town. There is nothing but the little wind coming from where the veil is fading. That is something that I didn’t think of before. Everything that is inside the veil will be gone, once the magic fades. The veil will slowly shrink until there is close to nothing left. It is hanging on from the natural elemental magic that exists in this plane and the one it is connected to.
I sigh and move towards our market area. We only have a couple of vans and trucks, since we trade some with outside people. Once I find a van that is big enough I drive it to where all of the things that couldn’t be transported are. All of the important documents and my things. If the documents were able to be transported I would just forgo my things and leave, but I need to bring the important items.
The van I chose is a short bus, converted to a van. It is blacked out and has shelves around it. Plenty of space for my boxes and to pull over to sleep if I need to. I haven’t slept in over 40 hours and it is showing in my eyes when I look at my reflection on the van.
I sigh and adjust my bun so it is more comfortable and on the top of my head. I believe I have heard some of the kids call it a messy bun. I turn and start loading the items in the van. When I am about half way done I hear footsteps appear behind me. I quickly spin around to see Henry, Iris, Ingrid, Marie, and Linc. All with a still tired and glassy eyed looking Dalya at their side.
“What are you all doing here?” I ask, giving Dalya a concerned look.
“I am fine. I was able to rest enough to bring them here and take them back when you ask.” Dalya says. “We are not going back. You can’t drive all that way alone.” Linc argues and I give him a stern look.
“I will be fine.” I say as I lift another box and walk it towards the van. Iris and Ingrid go to my pile and grab a couple boxes themselves.
“No. You don’t know what your.. THAT man knows. He might be waiting for you somewhere along the way.” Marie says. I turn around to see the three of them with their arms crossed and giving me a look that says we
are not leaving.
“Look, I need you all at the castle to monitor how it is going. It is a huge adjustment and you all need to be there since I can’t.” I say and I see understanding in Henry’s eyes, but the other two still don’t look co “Then you go back to the castle and we will drive the van.” Mari argues and I shake my head. “No. There is not going to be an argument about this. I’ll compromise. Iris and Ingrid can stay and you three

need to go back.” I say and I see the surprise on everyone’s faces.
“Why those two? You don’t know how to work with them if you get in trouble. And I doubt if something happens to the Queen, our pack will be allowed to stay there.” Linc says causing Iris and Ingrid to growl. “Obviously you don’t know much about these two. Before they found their mates they were a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield. They are the reason people started to believe that women were more than baby making machines. When you get back, you need to pick up a history book from the past 100 years and read it.” I lecture Linc.
