Chapter45
Evangelina’s POV
The next half hour is spent loading the van. Once everything was packed I looked around, a strange sadness settled in me as I realized this would be the last time I stepped foot in this land.
“Are you okay dear?” Ingrid asked, walking up and putting a hand on my shoulder.
“Yes. It’s just hard to leave. My pack and I built this place from nothing. It’s kind of like I am shutting a door on this part of my life.” I say looking into her gray eyes and she smiles slightly.
“You are shutting a door on this, but the exciting thing is looking forward to something new.” She says and I nod my head. If only she knew that my something new is going to contain me being tortured by the mate bond and then death to follow during the war.
“Let’s go. We’re going to reach my pack at midnight, then we can sleep for a few hours and head out again. Driving 13 hours straight when you haven’t got much sleep isn’t a smart idea.” Ingrid says and I can’t help but
agree.
I hop in the driver’s side and put my seatbelt on. Iris is sitting in the middle of the bench that was added into the bus, while Ingrid is sitting on the passenger side.
“Why do I always have to be in the middle?” Iris grumbles and Ingrid elbows her.
“Because you’re younger than me.” Ingrid says and Iris rolls her eyes.
“If you two start arguing I am going to send you both to the back with the boxes.” I say and they both laugh. “Yes mother.” Iris says jokingly and I shake my head. Maybe this was a mistake choosing them to stay with
I drive out of my pack and as I drive down the secret dirt path through the woods I tear escapes my eye. This is the end. I won’t have much longer after this. I feel an arm snake around my waist and then a head on my shoulder. The arm squeezes me then retreats back to the side of its owner.
“I never thanked you for taking in my girls.” Iris says after a few silent minutes.
“It was no problem at all. They grew on me and the pack when they were here for the summer. And of course it helped that they found their mates in my pack.” I answer and she nods her head.
“I could see a difference in both of them when they returned. Even Henry. Whatever you did helped all of them greatly. And now. Now it’s like I don’t even recognize them. They are so strong and independent. They’re actually happy. I think that is what the real change is in them.” She says sadly.
“Well I know that they missed their mother.” I say and see a tear slip down her face. I put my hand on her knee and squeezed. She puts her hand on top of mine and squeezes it back, but doesn’t let go.
“Evan. I am very sorry for judging you and your pack before I met them. Your pack is beautiful and filled with such kind loving people it is crazy. You are also an alpha like I have rarely seen. You genuinely care about your people and how they are treated and treat others. I have just met you and I can already tell that you a beautiful person inside and out. I don’t want to think of where my girls would be without your help.” She says and I smile.

“I try to be fair. All I want is my pack to be happy and protected.” I say and she nods her head.
“That is evident. And you are doing a good job at it.” She says.
“Thank you.” I say and we stay in a comfortable silence as we reach the main highway. After about 2 hours
broke the silence.
“So why did you come back to the pack to help me?” I ask, looking at Ingrid and Iris.
“I knew that you would need sleep and figured that my pack would be a good place to stop, since it is about halfway. It would just be easier if I was with you. Plus I wanted to see my mate.” Ingrid says and I smile at the longing and the starry look in her eyes when she speaks of her mate.
“Mine isn’t that practical. I just wanted to get away from my son’s skank of a chosen mate.” Iris says and my mouth falls open wide as I look at her.
“The road Evan!.” Iris screeches and I close my mouth and swerve back into our lane. Looks like I went into the opposite lane when I was looking at her.
“I have heard from the girls about her. And I’ll be honest, she is gorgeous, but I don’t see much between the eyes.” I say and Ingrid and Iris bark out a laugh as my wolf growls loudly at me for saying she is pretty.
