Evangelina’s POV
The next morning I woke up to some sort of commotion. I throw my bed head up and walk out of the room following the scent of bacon.
I hear pots and pans being pushed around and gain curious looks from different pack members. When ! reach the kitchen, I see Iris sitting at a small corner table looking outside with a mug in her hands.
“Did the commotion wake you too?” I ask and she turns her head in surprise.
“Yea. It is Ingrid and her mate, Louis.” She says and pulls her face into a disgusted look.
“OH! Uhhh. That’s information that I could do without.” I say as I take a seat across from her and pour myself a cup of coffee from the kettle on the center of the table. She laughs and takes a sip from her mug.
“They were having makeup s*x. I think he is upset that she is gone so much. He understands, but they have two kids that need their mother and he wants his mate here.” She says and I nod my head in understanding.
“I understand, it’s hard to leave your kids and mate.” I say and she looks at me in question.
“You understand?” She asks and I silently curse myself.
“Uh. Yeah. When my mate would leave I would have a hard time.” I say and her eyebrows shoot up in surprise.
“You have a mate? Where is he? I haven’t met him, have I?” She fires at me.
“I had a mate, yes. He was killed 14 years ago.” I answer and her eyes cast understanding and heartache.
“I am sorry to hear that. Not a day goes by that I don’t miss my William.” She says and I nod my head and turn to look out the window. The mountainous landscape is beautiful.
We sit there in somber silence for about 30 minutes before Ingrid walks in. Her brown hair is slightly disheveled and her face is flushed. A man walks behind her and wraps his arms around her torso then puts his head on her shoulder and looks at me and Iris. His yellow eyes hold slight curiosity, but mostly love for
his mate.
“This must be the mysterious rogue alpha that has been taking my mate from me.” He says and walks closer to me, holding out his hand.
“I am Alpha Louis of the Subernal pack. It’s nice to meet you, Alpha Evan.” He says holding out his hand. I stand up and grab his hand and shake it.
“Likewise Alpha Louis. Thank you for allowing me to get a few hours of rest here. I had a hiccup when moving.” I say and he nods his head, walking back towards his mate and pulling her close.
“So I have heard.” He says.
“You know. I think that I have taken too much of Ingrid’s time. I should be good to drive the rest of the way.” I say and he smiles appreciatively, while Ingrid scoffs.
“You are not driving the rest of the way alone.” Ingrid snaps.
“I’ll be with her.” Iris says, standing up and taking our mugs to the kitchen sink.
“Right, like that helps.” Ingrid says and Iris growls.

Ingrid, my love, please just stay, I can send one of our warriors with them if it would make
Louls says and she shakes her head.
“NO! I am going with them and when I get there and ensure everybody is settled I will transport back argues and I sigh, catching Ingrid’s gaze.
“I appreciate your help thus far and I know that you will be helping later as well. There is only 6 hours left in the drive. We will be fine. If not, I am sure that you will receive a vision and you will be able to come to us with warriors if need be.” I say and she glares at me.
“Fine. But one bump and I will be there. Don’t test me.” She scolds and I nod my head.
“I understand. Iris, are you ready? We really do need to get going.” I ask and Iris nods her head.
“The van is out front. We put gas in it for you. You should be good the rest of the way.” Louis says and I shake
his hand.
“Thank you, Alpha Louis. I look forward to seeing you again.” I say and hug Ingrid.
“I will see you soon.” I say and walk out to the van, getting in and waiting for Iris to buckle her seatbelt. “That was a close one. It seems she is willing to listen to you more than she does me.” Iris says and I
chuckle.
“Like minds.” I say and Iris scoffs.
“You are nothing like her my dear.” She says and I smile as I pull out of the driveway.
“We are both very strong in our gifts and bull headed. Mine only comes out when I am in Alpha mode.” I say and she shakes her head.
“Those are common qualities among strong wolves, that doesn’t make you like minded.” She says.
“I guess you’re right.” I say because I know I won’t win the argument.
We drive for about an hour passing through the mountains in comfortable silence whe Iris breaks it. “Can I ask you something?” Iris asks me and I nod my head in acknowledgement. “You said that your mate died. It is very hard to kill a werewolf. What kept you going?” She asks and the memory of my sweet Xavier being killed plays at the forefront of my mind. The pain, the sorrow, everything. She must have seen the pain on my face because she quickly shakes her head. “I’m sorry. You don’t have to answer that. I was just curious. You are very young.” She says.
“No, it’s fine. I just don’t talk about it. The time is a blur. My pack members know of some of the events, but not in great detail. Honestly, I can’t even remember the details.” I say honestly.
