The secretary smiled without explaining.

Orders were orders. No questions asked.

Stuck in the lounge, Debra pulled out homework she hadn't touched in three days. Staring at the pile, she felt her head spin.

Getting nagged by teachers at school was bad enough, and now Juan was bossing her around. It made her fume.

An hour later, she finished one test paper, but Juan was still in his meeting.

She checked the time. It was already 8 p.m. and pitch dark outside.

"When's your boss gonna wrap up? I need to get home," she said.

"Mr. Nichols got you some food. Eat if you're hungry," the secretary replied, placing a takeout bag in front of her.

She opened it and saw all her favorites. She blinked. "Your boss picked this?"

"Yes, Miss Frazier," the secretary confirmed.

"How did he know what I liked?" Debra asked, suspicious. "He's been digging into me?"

Realizing the truth, she shot up from the couch. The secretary failed to stop her as she stormed into the conference room.

The managers stared as she barged in, takeout bag in hand.

"I'm still in high school," she added. "I'm not planning to marry anyone. Your actions just make you shady to me."

The room fell into dead silence.

Three seconds later, he muttered, "I'm sorry. If you don't like it, I'll stop. As for the engagement... If you hate it, we can call it off."

Debra was surprised by how reasonable he sounded.

She remembered Ralph saying Juan had approached the engagement like a business deal but offered generous gifts. He'd even saved several of their businesses.

Marrying her gave him some old-school connections, but what he'd paid was worth way more. Yet he still chose her.
