“Okay.”

Chloe’s phone lit up with an incoming call. She checked the screen–it was Zachary.

She answered promptly.

“What is it?”

“About that item you’ve been trying to track down, there’s finally a lead.”

Hearing this, Chloe’s demeanor shifted. The object she’d been seeking for so many years–had a genuine lead finally emerged?

“Mistveil Manor is hosting an exclusive charity gala in two days. The piece will be among the auction items.” Zachary’s voice dropped to a whisper. “It’s strictly by invitation. Even a silver invitation is super hard to get. Only the highest–level business executives and government officials received invites.”

“Got it,” Chloe responded softly.

“I’ll try to secure you an invitation.”

After their brief exchange, Chloe ended the call. She absently turned her phone in her hand, her eyes taking on a distant look.

She had waited years for Sleep–Soothing Jade.

True to its legendary properties, it was said to improve sleep quality for ordinary people and slow disease progression for the seriously ill. A decade ago, it had vanished and she felt responsible.

No matter what it took, she needed to recover it.

Her phone buzzed again—this time a message from Robert.

Chloe clicked on it and glanced over–Robert’s message was the same as Zachary’s, a photo of the Sleep–Soothing Jade.

“Mommy, the item’s showing up at the Mistveil Manor charity auction. Invitations aren’t available through any underground channels. Should I try to hack their system and create an entry point?”

After Chloe read Robert’s message, her eyes narrowed in concern. The auction would attract all of Capaville’s elite along with international dignitaries. Security would be unprecedented.

Robert couldn’t afford to reveal his capabilities at this point.

As the workday concluded, Chloe and Diana exited the company together.

“Chloe, I’ll make sure these designs reach every department personally.”

At the elevator lobby, Diana would board the upward elevator to send the design drafts as Chloe had instructed, while Chloe would take the downward one

“Have a wonderful weekend, Chloe!” As Chloe stepped into the elevator, Diana smiled and waved.

Chloe returned the smile before the doors scaled completely.

Clutching the design portfolios, Diana waited for her elevator.

“Diana!”

She turned to see an imposing figure approaching.

“Linda!” Diana offered a polite greeting.

“Diana, you’ve been with the company for a while now. Do you address everyone so informally?” a sharp voice interjected from the side.

Diana glanced over–it was Lisa Bacon from the design department, serving as Linda Dorsey’s assistant.

Lisa walked up with Linda, looked Diana up and down, and her eyes rested on the materials in Diana’s arms. With just one glance, she knew those were design drafts.

There was no question about whose design drafts these were.

“Linda? You refer to her that way?” Lisa’s gaze held clear contempt as she stared at Diana.

Diana gave a small bow to the two women, maintaining her respectful tone. “Ms. Dorsey!”

Linda raised an eyebrow at the formal address. “The company had you work with the new hire -did you learn absolutely nothing? Our department has numerous talented designers and your team’s the least visible, yet you’re in charge of the company’s brand–new collection. A novice designer without credentials or reputation suddenly becomes a design director? It’s laughable!”

Diana maintained her composed smile. “Ms. Lewis is a specially invited director at the company now. The company’s got its reasons for this arrangement. They put me as her assistant, so I’ll do my best at my job. As for the rest, it’s not my place to meddle.”
