Madilyn wanted to argue more, but the staff had already turned to welcome new guests. She shot Jennifer a look, snorted dismissively, and walked into the venue with her head held high.

Meanwhile, Chloe followed a staff member directly into the main hall. Tonight’s charity gala was

scheduled to start at eight o’clock, with the auction happening later. The hall was filled with fine wines and delicious food, with Michelin–starred chefs preparing dishes on demand.

Chloe heard the sneering voice behind her and glanced over–only to see Madilyn and Jennifer strolling toward her, arms linked tight.

“Does my eating bother you?” Chloe raised an eyebrow, ignoring their hostile looks as she continued to enjoy her food.

Madilyn watched Chloe dismiss her so easily, and all her earlier frustration returned. “You went through so much trouble to get an invitation just to stuff yourself with free food? How much did you pay for that invitation? Do you think you’ll get your money’s worth? What did you have to do for it? You’ll stop at nothing to climb the social ladder, won’t you? How desperate can you be!”

Madilyn’s words turned even sharper. “Not every woman gets to enjoy a wealthy man’s money. Those who only have looks and nothing else are the most worthless.”

Chloe listened to all this, then took a cocktail from a passing waiter’s tray. Instead of getting angry, she smiled at Madilyn. “Oh, Mrs. Myers, were you just saying I’m pretty? Thank you for the compliment!”

Madilyn was furious. When had she ever complimented her? Was Chloe crazy? She was being sarcastic- couldn’t Chloe tell?
