Chapter 126 The Inner Circle
Arthur paused, then shook his head firmly. “How would she know someone like Mr. Slade?” During their six–year marriage, Chloe had never been part of his social circle. Even his own employees didn’t know she existed as his wife. The wealthy young heirs around town had no idea who she was either. A few people knew he was married, but no one had any idea who his wife really was.
There was no way she had connections in Capaville’s elite circles, let alone with a powerful figure like Joseph.
Madilyn’s eyes narrowed with suspicion. She moved closer, her voice dropping to a whisper. “Be honest with me–how else would she get such special treatment? She must have found herself a powerful man, right? How else would Mr. Slade invite her personally?”
Arthur remained silent.
“We both know what she’s capable of,” Madilyn continued, her expression turning venomous. “What real skills does she have to impress these people? Who knows what dirty tricks she’s been playing behind the scenes?” Her eyes flashed with disgust and cunning. “She’s broke, raising a child alone. How else is she surviving? She’s using the only thing she’s got–that pretty face of hers.”
Arthur’s already dark mood soured even further.
Maybe Madilyn was right. If Chloe really was doing what she suggested…
The thought made his dislike for her intensify.
No–he needed to hear it from Chloe herself. If she really dared to stoop that low… he’d make sure she regretted it.

Meanwhile, Chloe followed Joe upstairs to a lavishly decorated foyer.
“Ms. Lewis, right through here,” Joe said, opening a heavy door for her. “Mr. Slade and the others are waiting.” He bowed politely and stepped aside, making it clear she would be entering alone.
Chloe noted his use of “others.” Who else was inside? Landon? He’d texted earlier saying he’d arrived and would meet with Joseph first. So they already knew what happened downstairs? Had Landon arranged this?
Her boss was being unusually thoughtful.

Without his intervention, she’d still be fending off snakes and monsters in the main hall.
“Thank you,” she said calmly.
Chloe lifted her chin and walked through the doorway with natural grace.
She felt completely composed–confident and elegant. The timid, ordinary housewife was gone forever.
This was the real Chloe–no longer hiding her light.
Inside the room, cheerful conversation filled the air, but it stopped abruptly when she entered.
Her eyes quickly found Landon sitting across the room. When he spotted her, his face broke into a wide grin, and he stood up at once.
“Look who decided to join us! The guest of honor,” Landon announced warmly. He extended his hand toward her, then turned to address the others. “Mr. Slade, let me introduce our most mysterious and talented designer–Chloe.”
Chloe smiled gracefully and moved to stand beside Landon. Following his gesture, she glanced toward the other sofa and froze for a second.
The sofa had been facing away from her, so she’d only noticed Landon at first. Now she saw that besides Joseph, Eugene was also sitting there.
Joseph had a full head of white hair. Though clearly in his seventies, he appeared strong and healthy. He was calmly fingering a string of prayer beads, radiating the quiet confidence of someone completely at peace with himself.
When his eyes met Chloe’s, he smiled warmly. “So this is Ms. Lewis. I’ve heard wonderful things about your artistic talent. I’ve been looking forward to this meeting. Thank you for coming.”
“You’re too kind, Mr. Slade. I’m honored,” Chloe replied smoothly, shaking his hand with practiced grace.
“Please, let’s all sit and talk properly,” Joseph suggested, settling into the central seat.
The spacious room contained only a few seating areas. Joseph occupied the main position. There were two other luxurious sofas–one now empty where Landon had been sitting before he stood up, the other where Joseph and Eugene had been seated together, though only Eugene remained there now.
