“Mom, you don’t need to meddle in my personal affairs,” Arthur said sharply, his tone carrying a hint of defiance.

Madilyn’s eyes flew open in shock, disbelief washing over her face at his unexpected words. This was the very first time Arthur had ever openly challenged her authority. Was he truly standing up to her?

“Arthur, I am your mother,” Madilyn retorted, her voice cold and cutting. “Just look at how you behaved tonight. That ridiculous scene at the auction—did you even think about how foolish you made yourself look?”

Arthur said nothing, his silence only fueling her frustration.

“You’re supposed to be the head of the Myers family, yet you let yourself lose control over a woman after just a few words? If this gets out, you’ll become the joke of the entire business world. Maybe you don’t care about your reputation, but I certainly do,” Madilyn’s voice grew louder, tinged with anger and disappointment. “How could I have raised such a disappointing son?”

“Mom!” Arthur’s voice was strained, but he didn’t interrupt.

“Your father died young, and you were raised under your grandfather’s wing, never learning your limits. Look at you now. Chloe’s climbing the social ladder fast. For a country girl like her, clinging to wealthy men is her only way up. Why would she ever look back at you?” Madilyn’s words stabbed at him like daggers.

“Why is my life so unfortunate?” Madilyn’s voice cracked, her composure finally breaking. She staggered, squeezed her eyes shut, and nearly fell backward.

“Mrs. Myers!” Jennifer quickly stepped forward, catching her just in time.

“Mom, are you okay?” Arthur’s concern was genuine as he steadied her.

“You’re going to drive me mad sooner or later! Absolutely hopeless! You’re the president of Myers Group. After finally cutting ties with someone like Chloe, you still chase after her? Do you really want her to announce to the world that you were once married?” Madilyn’s voice trembled with frustration.

Arthur’s face darkened at her words.

To him, Chloe was nothing more than an ex—barely worth mentioning as a former wife.

“Jennifer,” Arthur said softly, stepping forward to support his mother, “the auction is almost over. Let’s head home.”

Madilyn glanced at Arthur, noticing his calm demeanor and the fact that he had stopped pursuing Chloe. Satisfied, she dropped her dramatic act and allowed Arthur to take her arm.

“Come on. You need to greet our business partners. Charles always introduced you before, but now that he’s gone, it’s up to you to show that you’re leading Myers Group,” she said firmly.

“Of course,” Arthur replied quietly, then left with Madilyn and Jennifer following close behind.
