Chapter 15 Need a Job

The mention of Myers Group made Eugene’s eyes flicker. He turned to gaze out the car window at the passing cityscape.
Capaville was all glittering lights and glamour–the kind of place where a person could easily lose themselves. Yet every time Eugene found himself here, memories of past events clouded his mood.
He’d never been ambushed before in his life. The only exception was because of some random woman.
A cold glint flashed in Eugene’s eyes as he recalled the moment Chloe had stared directly at the private room. There had been a curtain between them; he was certain no one outside could see in. Yet, he’d felt an uncanny sensation–as if her gaze had pierced right through the barrier and locked eyes with him.
Her stare had been sharp, penetrating. It felt like she knew exactly where they were. Or perhaps it was just pure intuition.
Did she know they were watching her the entire time? The thought made his eyes darken.
“Bruce!” he called out abruptly.
“Yes, sir? What do you need?”
‘Check the Dark Web for any information on Chloe.”
Chloe? A woman?
Bruce’s entire body tensed at the request. He’d worked for Eugene for years, and this was the first time his boss had ever asked him to investigate a woman.
Meanwhile, Chloe had returned to the hotel with Robert.
No sooner had they arrived than Zachary called. He reported that he’d personally delivered the divorce papers to Myers Manor, handing them directly to Arthur.
To make it easier to look after Jennifer, he’d moved both Jennifer and Jenarth into Myers Manor.
“I managed to get photos of Arthur personally tending to Jennifer,” Zachary said over the phone. “If these were made public, the boss of Myers Group would be in for some serious trouble. At the very least, in the court of public opinion, you’d come out on top.”
“No need. He’ll sign,” Chloe replied calmly, keeping her voice low. “But I need you to focus your efforts on Robert. Handle Arthur for me on this.”
“Don’t worry! Leave it all to me,” Zachary assured before hanging up.
Chloe
put her phone away and turned to find Robert tiptoeing toward the bedroom, his back to her.
“Robert!” she called out, her voice firm and commanding.
Robert flinched, then turned around slowly. Meeting her gaze, he forced an innocent smile. “Mom, do you need something?”

Chloe looked at him sternly. “Did you forget what you promised me?”
A chill ran down Robert’s spine.
Crap! He’d been so frustrated earlier. Jennifer and Jenarth had been so fake and annoying that he’d deliberately exposed them, hoping to teach them a lesson. Had he gone too far?
Robert averted his eyes, his face scrunching up in a pout. “Mom, I was just sticking up for you! That fake mother–and–son duo were bullying us! Are we just supposed to take it?” His voice trembled with genuine grievance. “Dad’s a jerk, and he’s gone. It’s just us now. We need to show those bullies what regret really feels like!”
Chloe listened to Robert’s passionate defense, and a wave of warmth washed over her heart.
“Sweetie,” she said softly, walking over and kneeling down to hug him tightly. “I’m just worried about you.”
Robert remained silent, returning her embrace.
Chloe pulled back slightly to look him in the eye, her expression serious. “No more public tricks, okay? The things you do on the Dark Web make a lot of powerful people nervous. Let’s not risk unnecessary rouble.”
‘Got it, Mom,” Robert mumbled into her shoulder.
As she held him close, a flicker of worry passed through Chloe’s eyes. Robert was her child, and since he had nothing to do with Arthur, she needed to cut ties quickly. Every moment of hesitation was just inviting more danger.
