Chapter 14 Gut Feeling

The man seated across from him had remained impeccably composed throughout the entire scene, not a flicker of disturbance crossing his features.

Landon, however, couldn’t shake his irritation. For the first time in his life, a woman had genuinely captured his interest. He’d navigated these social circles for years, everyone knew him as Mr. Voss, yet he’d never even caught a whisper of this particular woman being connected to Arthur.

Arthur! That guy really knows how to keep a secret. How come I never noticed he had someone this intriguing by his side?

Seeing that Eugene was giving him the silent treatment, Landon slid closer. “Eugene, how did you know I was wrong earlier? How did you know that woman wasn’t the mistress, but the wife?”

Mistress versus the legal wife!

Before the truth surfaced, nearly everyone in the restaurant had assumed the woman dining alone with her child was the mistress, and that the one with Arthur was his legitimate family. The reality was the complete opposite.

Eugene had tried to point it out to him, but Landon had been shut down before he could even argue. He’d foolishly mistaken the real wife for a mistress, and the actual mistress for the wife!

In the end, I was the clown. Landon thought, thoroughly annoyed. He’d seen countless beautiful women and prided himself on his judgment. Usually, if he wanted a woman’s attention, a mere snap of his fingers would suffice. But tonight, he’d misjudged the same woman repeatedly.

Total epic fail.

Eugene offered no response. He simply swirled his drink, finished it in one go, and placed the glass firmly on the table.

“Alright, you lost the bet. You’re covering the bill tonight,” Eugene stated flatly, rising to his feet as if to leave.

Seeing him about to walk out, Landon scrambled up in a panic.

“You still haven’t answered me! How did you know she wasn’t the mistress?” Landon pressed, his expression dead serious.

Eugene glanced up, about to speak, when a ringing phone cut him off.

It was Landon’s.

Seeing it was one of his subordinates, he answered on speakerphone. “Go ahead.”

“Mr. Voss, we’ve gathered some preliminary information, but… it’s not extensive. Here’s what we have so far…” The voice on the other end reported.

“Just spit it out,” Landon said, impatience creeping into his voice.

“Mr. Voss, our initial checks confirm that Arthur Myers, president of Myers Group, is indeed married. His wife is registered as Chloe Lewis. She’s the heiress of Lewis Group, who was brought back into the family at nineteen. She married Arthur just a month after her return. They have a son named Robert.”

“Married at nineteen, and to Arthur, no less,” Landon muttered, shaking his head. “Yet neither Myers Group nor the Lewis family ever went public with it. They even have a child together, but they won’t grant her the proper status. What a piece of work Arthur is.”

Eugene raised a brow, mildly amused. Since when did this playboy develop such a strong sense of righteousness?

Ms. Lewis has maintained an extremely low profile,” the subordinate continued. “Since her marriage into he Myers family, she’s focused solely on domestic life. She’s never been involved in the company’s business or made any public appearances. That’s why she’s virtually unknown in our circles.”

Understood.” Landon ended the call quickly and turned back to Eugene, unable to hold back his rustration. “Eugene, Arthur is such a two–faced hypocrite. He puts on this polite, gentlemanly front and seems like a solid business partner. But now I’m thinking, collaborating with a man like that might not be uch a great idea after all.”

The image of Arthur blatantly siding with his mistress over his own wife replayed in Landon’s mind.

Screw that! He genuinely felt sorry for Chloe, being tied to a scumbag like that.

Even their child seemed to grasp the situation better than Arthur did. What a joke!

The whole thing was pretty damn ironic.

f Chloe were my woman, Landon found himself thinking, I’d treat her like a queen. I’d never let anyone hurt her or pu he blame on her.

‘I think-” Landon began, wanting to discuss it further, but he saw Eugene was already at the door.
