Maybe he’d already left. On her way here, aside from the manor staff, she hadn’t seen a soud.

“Engene?” she called out, her voice quiet

No answer. She hesitated for a beat, uncertainty flickering in her eyes, before brushing it off as a trick of her imagination. With a quiet sigh, she turned to leave.

She had just taken a step when she stopped dead. Her eyes went to the far end of the hallway, where the corridor seemed to turn into a hidden nook.

Chloe sensed a person. The feeling got stronger as she moved closer.

A man. The sound of heavy, ragged breathing.

With each step, the sound grew clearer.

He was leaning against the wall, a complete mess.

His hair was damp. On his face and along his collarbone, beads of moisture trailed down. She couldn’t tell if it was sweat or water.

Eugene’s eyes met hers. Something shifted in his gaze—a strange, wild look, the edges tinged with red.

“Eugene!” The word burst from her, and her hand reached for him without thought.

“Don’t touch me.” His voice was sharp, a harsh command.

Her hand froze. She stared, shocked. His eyes were bloodshot. His shirt was wrinkled, one button popped open.

As she thought back to the intense warmth that had radiated from him moments before, her stomach twisted. Was Eugene…

“You…” The words caught in her throat.

He had to have been drugged. The only thing it could be was that “apology” drink from Anthony.

That drink was meant for her. Eugene had taken it instead. If he hadn’t, she’d be the one falling apart right now.

He had looked so sorry, all while planning something this disgusting behind her back.

“Eugene, can you hold on?” Chloe asked, her eyes darting down the empty hall. He must have come here to avoid being seen.

If he could just stay in control, she could get him back to Landon and Joseph. There must be an antidote or something of the sort within Mistveil Manor.

She needed to find help. Landon, Joseph, anyone.

“Stay here. I’m going to get someone,” Chloe said, turning to go.

“Stop.” The word was rough, an order.

“I’m okay.”

Chloe looked back. His breathing was heavier than before. Was he really okay?

“Hang in there if you can! I’ll support you back. You need to find meds to relieve your symptoms.” She moved closer, took his hand, and tried to support his weight.

The moment her skin touched his, she felt it–his body was burning up. The veins on his hand stood out, his control clearly slipping.

If he was fighting it this hard, the drug was powerful.

Anthony had never planned to let her get away unharmed.

“Just hold on. I’ll—”

She didn’t get to finish. Eugene pulled her wrist hard. The next thing she knew, she was stumbling as he dragged her forward and pushed her back against the wall. Before she could react, he leaned into her, trapping her between his body and the wall.

“You’re so cold. It helps,” he muttered, his arm tightening around her waist, holding her there.

“Mommy… Eugene’s been drugged. It’s really strong. If he doesn’t get help soon, he won’t last half an hour. He’ll die.”

Robert’s voice buzzed in her ear. Chloe’s heart jumped. She’d forgotten Robert and Oralia were watching this.
