Arthur heard her voice and stalled, still dazed. He hadn’t recovered from the earlier shock.

“Arthur, are you just going to stand there and let them take me? You promised you would always take care of me,” Jennifer pressed, her voice breaking.

Arthur’s mind finally snapped back to the present. He looked toward where Chloe had exited, paused for a long moment, then finally turned back and softly said, “Jennifer.”
