Arthur’s expression darkened at Jennifer’s words. If Chloe’s public outbursts became known, it would seriously damage the Myers family’s reputation.
If only Chloe could be as considerate as Jennifer, then he wouldn’t have lost his temper like that.
“Jennifer, I understand. You should get some rest,” Arthur said, rubbing his temples wearily.
Noticing his fatigue, Jennifer offered softly, “Arthur, let me help you relax.”
“Hmm?”
“I learned some massage techniques while abroad. I know a few methods to relieve tension. You look exhausted–please let me help.” Without waiting for his response, she stepped forward and began gently massaging his brow.
Arthur initially wanted to refuse, but the rare sensation of comfort made him relent.
Under the soft lighting, the scene appeared almost intimate.
Arthur closed his eyes to rest while Jennifer focused on her task. Seeing him gradually relax, she leaned in slightly, as if about to kiss him, when a sharp voice suddenly shattered the moment.
“Arthur…”
His eyes snapped open, and he immediately stood up.
Jennifer quickly withdrew her hands and stepped back, putting a respectful distance between them.
She glanced toward the doorway. If her guess was correct, that voice belonged to Arthur’s mother.
“Arthur, are you in here?”
Following the voice, an elegant middle–aged woman dressed in luxury entered–Madilyn, Arthur’s mother.
Madilyn’s expression was stern as she strode into the room. Spotting Arthur, her gaze immediately fell upon Jennifer standing behind him.
She studied Jennifer for a few seconds before marching over and grasping Arthur’s hand. “I heard you divorced Chloe?”
Arthur’s face tightened again at the mention of Chloe, just when he had finally started to relax.
“Mom, let me explain-”
“Explain what? You should have gotten rid of that woman long ago,” Madilyn interrupted sharply. “Show me the divorce papers. That woman has always been shady, always pretending. Did she try to take your money?
“Listen, Chloe was never loved by her own family. She’ll definitely try to claim half your assets. Don’t give

her a single cent. We’ll hire the best lawyer in the city to ensure this divorce is clean. I won’t have her crawling back to you later.” Madilyn’s words made her dislike for Chloe abundantly clear.
“Mom!” Arthur snapped, clearly annoyed.
Madilyn fell silent.
Jennifer remained standing quietly to the side, not moving a muscle.
“Mom, Chloe did divorce me, and I signed the papers. But she’s not the person you think she is,” Arthur tried to explain. “Chloe didn’t ask for anything. She didn’t take a single cent from our family.”
“What?” Madilyn looked stunned. “A country girl passing up such a golden opportunity? She’s just playing hard to get. Do you really believe that act?”
“Mom, whether you believe it or not, Chloe genuinely didn’t want anything.” Arthur felt a wave of frustration. Honestly, I almost wish she had fought for some of my assets–at least that would have shown. she still cared, that she wasn’t ready to let go completely.
But her total indifference, her determination to cut all ties… The thought left a bitter taste in his mouth.
Madilyn’s eyes narrowed as her gaze shifted past Arthur to Jennifer. “Is she the reason Chloe divorced you?”
Jennifer froze, lowering her head with a hint of grievance. “Mrs. Madilyn Myers, I…”
Arthur quickly intervened, “Mom, did Chloe say something to you? Jennifer and I are completely innocent. Don’t forget–she saved my life. If it weren’t for her, I might not even be here. We met years ago, then she went abroad and became a world–renowned pianist.”
