**A Promise Hidden in the Quiet Rain by Adrian Hale**
**Chapter 200: The Break**
“See them out,” Arthur instructed Donald, his tone calm yet firm, as if he were directing a simple task rather than a life-altering moment.
“Of course, Mr. Myers,” Donald replied with a curt nod, stepping forward with an air of professionalism. “Ms. Williams, if you would follow me, please.” His voice was devoid of warmth, almost mechanical in its execution.
Jennifer stood frozen, her heart racing as her eyes remained locked onto Arthur. Despite her arms encircling him, he refused to meet her gaze, his face a mask of indifference. Tears streamed down her cheeks, a silent testament to her despair, yet he remained unmoved, a statue of emotional detachment.
The chill in Donald’s voice cut through her like ice. There was no semblance of respect in his words, no hint of compassion. Was this truly how it was all going to end? Were they really casting her aside as if she were nothing more than refuse?
Myers Manor had always been the embodiment of her dreams, a place she envisioned as her future home. She had imagined herself as the lady of this grand estate, hosting elegant soirées and basking in the warmth of family gatherings. But now, that dream was disintegrating before her very eyes, slipping away like wisps of smoke in the breeze.
“Arthur, please,” she implored, her voice trembling with desperation. “I’ll do anything you ask. Just don’t make me leave.” The weight of her plea hung in the air, heavy with the promise of her devotion.
“Jennifer, there was never anything real between us. Right?” Arthur’s voice was steady, devoid of any hint of emotion, as if he were discussing the weather rather than the end of their relationship.
Caught off guard, Jennifer struggled to find her voice. Arthur’s hand enveloped hers, and for a fleeting moment, hope flickered within her. Perhaps he had reconsidered, perhaps there was still a chance. But then, with deliberate intent, he pried her fingers away, leaving her to grapple with the sudden void.
A wave of numbness washed over her. She had never anticipated such cruelty from him, never imagined he would sever their connection so callously.
She stood there, paralyzed by shock, her mind racing.
Arthur turned to her, his gaze as cold as steel. “Donald, get a car ready,” he commanded, his tone brooking no argument.
Donald was already at her side, his demeanor unyielding. “Ms. Williams, it’s getting late. You really don’t want to miss your flight,” he urged, his words lacking any trace of empathy.
Jennifer remained rooted in place, her eyes searching Arthur’s for a glimmer of warmth, but all she found was a chilling void that felt like disgust.
Panic surged within her, but deep down, she understood that it was far too late to change his mind.
She bit her lip, a solitary tear escaping to trace a path down her cheek.
“Arthur,” she whispered, her voice barely audible, “I’ll go. I promise I’ll listen to you. But before I leave, could you grant me just one small request? It’s simple, I swear.” The fear of rejection propelled her forward. “Can I hug you? Just one last time. Please, let me have that so I can truly move on.”
He regarded her silently, his expression inscrutable.
