**A Promise Hidden in the Quiet Rain by Adrian Hale**
**Chapter 246: The Viper’s Payback**
Emily found herself paralyzed, her mind racing as she processed the chaotic scene unfolding around her.
“Oralia has always been so kind to everyone, and you…” Carolyn’s voice trembled, a single tear escaping down her cheek, glistening like a tiny crystal in the harsh lights of the set. Emily could see the emotional turmoil etched across Carolyn’s face. It was as if the weight of the world rested on her slender shoulders, and she was on the verge of collapse.
“Why would I ever hurt Oralia? I’ve always admired her,” Emily pleaded, her voice quivering with desperation. She wanted to defend herself, to explain that her intentions had been pure. Yet, the evidence was damning; the spices she had added during the cooking process were unmistakably linked to the chaos that had ensued.
Those spices, seemingly innocent on their own, had the potential to attract the most venomous of snakes. But how could she have known? Carolyn had specifically asked her to prepare treats for the crew, and Emily had poured her heart and soul into that task. The thought of causing harm was utterly foreign to her.
“Emily, I brought you here because you said you wanted to see Oralia,” Carolyn’s voice cracked, her emotions spilling over. “But now you’ve hurt her. This is my fault. I’m so sorry, everyone.” She bowed deeply to the crowd, her posture radiating guilt and despair. When she straightened, tears cascaded down her cheeks, leaving glistening trails in their wake.
Emily stood there, completely immobilized, her mind a whirlwind of confusion and disbelief. The officers, without a moment’s hesitation, advanced towards her and clasped cold handcuffs around her wrists, the metal biting into her skin.
“Come with us to the station for questioning,” one of the officers instructed, his tone devoid of any sympathy.
Panic surged within Emily as she attempted to resist, but the two officers were unyielding, firmly guiding her away.
The atmosphere on set had shifted dramatically; a heavy pall of gloom enveloped everyone. Brian, attempting to regain control, broke the silence. “It’s handled. Take an hour break, then we resume filming.” His voice was steady, but Emily could sense the underlying tension in his demeanor.
Slowly, the crew began to disperse, retreating to their respective rest areas. Oralia, visibly shaken, pulled Chloe back to their lounge. They had been filming as if everything was normal, never anticipating that they would become embroiled in something so sinister.
As Carolyn observed Emily being led away, a glint of cold satisfaction flickered in her eyes. She had anticipated this outcome from the very start.
From the moment Emily had set foot on the set, it was evident to everyone that she was an infatuated fan of Oralia, someone who had cunningly used Carolyn’s name to gain access.
The situation had spiraled into something perilous. With this elaborate scheme in place, Emily found herself trapped, unable to prove her innocence.
Because Emily had handled all those ingredients herself. Individually, they posed no threat, but when combined, they transformed into a potent snake attractant. Add a few stimulants to the mix, and the trap was perfectly set.
Even as the investigation unfolded, all evidence would lead away from Carolyn. She had merely been the one to bring Emily into this mess. At worst, she would play the role of the unwitting friend.
It had been astonishingly easy to manipulate Emily. When Carolyn had first suggested she needed help, Emily’s expression had been one of shock and disbelief.
So Carolyn had shifted her approach—better to let the naive girl take on the burden herself.
Had both Oralia and Chloe been eliminated, Carolyn would have sent Emily a thank-you card.
But alas, Emily had bungled it, dragging herself down instead. What a fool.
