**A Promise Hidden in the Quiet Rain by Adrian Hale**
**Chapter 247: The Price of a Life**
Chloe’s voice sliced through the air like a knife, its coldness wrapping around the room and tightening the atmosphere. The tension was palpable, hanging heavily between them.
Carolyn felt her heart race, a jolt of panic coursing through her veins. She forced a look of fragility, trying to mask the fear rising within her. “Chloe, I don’t understand what you’re saying,” she stammered, her voice trembling slightly.
“Don’t understand? That’s perfectly fine. We can sit down, hash it out together. After all, we’re still sisters, aren’t we?” Chloe moved deliberately, her steps slow as she pulled a chair closer and settled into it, her posture relaxed yet commanding.
As Carolyn’s gaze fell on Chloe, who now blocked the exit, her mind went blank. All she could think about was escape. The venom of the snake had coursed through her, and she needed an antidote—urgently. “Chloe, a snake bit me. I need a doctor,” she said, her voice rising in desperation as she fumbled for her phone, ready to dial for help.
“A doctor? That would take too long. This,” Chloe said, her fingers expertly rolling a small vial, “is the real antidote—crafted specifically for that snake’s venom. I’m quite certain it’s just what you need.”
Carolyn’s eyes locked onto the vial, her jaw tightening in frustration. “Chloe, I’ve been bitten! Please, just give me the antidote!”
A slight smile played on Chloe’s lips, a glimmer of something sinister in her eyes. “So, are you finally ready to admit it? You went to great lengths to try and kill me, even throwing your own supporter under the bus?”
Carolyn’s breath caught in her throat. Was it possible that Chloe knew everything?
No, that couldn’t be. Emily had just been taken away—how could Chloe possibly have any proof? This had to be a bluff, an attempt to rattle her into a confession.
She refused to take the bait.
“Chloe, I know you’ve always resented me because Dad favored me. But the police already figured it out—Emily is the one who did it, consumed by her obsession with Oralia. And now you’re blaming me? That’s just cruel.” Carolyn’s voice quivered, thick with feigned emotion, her eyes shimmering as if tears were about to spill. “Everyone saw it—I was the first one injured!”
Chloe’s smile morphed into something colder, her gaze unwavering as she returned Carolyn’s stare. “You even schemed against yourself to shift the blame to someone else. That takes a certain kind of skill.” She tilted her head, her tone dripping with sarcasm. “For that, I must commend you—seriously. You’re quite the piece of work.”
Frantically, Carolyn attempted to reach a crew member, but there was no response. Panic bubbled within her as she watched Chloe remain unnervingly calm. She tried calling Brian next, her heart racing with urgency.
She had been bitten. Time was slipping away, and she had no idea how long she had before the venom took its toll. She had to escape this room and find help.
But Brian’s phone was off.
