**Chapter 307: Hollow Victory**
Madilyn’s heart raced with a growing sense of unease, a feeling that settled heavily in her chest like a stone. How was it that Arthur seemed to have an uncanny ability to leave every woman he slept with pregnant? The thought gnawed at her, raising questions that lingered in the air like a thick fog. Was there something more sinister at play?
“Charles,” she began, her voice steady but laced with a hint of urgency, “the situation has become quite delicate. Perhaps we should consider allowing Arthur to marry this Jennifer woman. It might be wise to appease public sentiment. If it turns out she is unsuitable, they can always part ways after the wedding.”
She turned her gaze toward Arthur, her expectations high that he would seize this moment to elaborate on their wedding plans, to paint a picture of a future that seemed increasingly uncertain.
Even if Charles raised objections, Arthur could at least articulate the necessity of this marriage, emphasizing that it was not his ideal choice but one born out of obligation.
“Grandpa,” Arthur said, his tone flat and devoid of any inflection, “Jennifer and I were already planning to get engaged. Now that she’s pregnant, I have to take responsibility. I intend to marry her within the month.”
The words hung in the air, heavy with finality. There would be no engagement, only a swift transition into marriage.
“Pregnant?” Charles’ eyes widened in shock at the mention of Jennifer’s name, his demeanor shifting from calm to stern in an instant. “Jennifer is pregnant?” His gaze bore into Arthur, a storm of emotions flickering across his face. “When did this happen?”
“Grandpa, I’m sorry. I made a mistake,” Arthur replied, lowering his head as if bracing for a reprimand or worse. “I’m ready to accept any punishment you deem appropriate.”
Madilyn observed this exchange with a sense of concealed satisfaction. Would this finally push Charles to lose his temper? He had always been so unwaveringly devoted to Chloe. If he learned that Arthur was marrying Jennifer, surely he would be the first to object.
Go on—get angry! Let it all out! Perhaps the shock would even be enough to send him over the edge.
“Grandpa, go ahead—hit me!” Arthur suddenly dropped to his knees before Charles, his heart racing as he awaited the inevitable explosion of fury. He watched Charles’ expression with bated breath, anticipating the outburst he felt was imminent. At this point, all he could do was secure Jennifer’s position—make her the legitimate wife of the Myers heir, the lady of the household. As long as she found satisfaction in this arrangement, that was all that mattered to him.
It was the least he could do for her, and the most he was capable of giving.
As for love… that was a concept he could no longer afford to entertain.
Hit him! His grandfather had a notorious temper. Maybe if Charles unleashed his wrath, it would somehow bring clarity to the chaos of Arthur’s life.
