**A Promise Hidden in the Quiet Rain by Adrian Hale**
**Chapter 349: Marriage Certificates**
Madilyn stood there, enveloped in a heavy silence, refusing to acknowledge Arthur’s presence. The air between them was thick with unspoken words and unresolved tensions. Arthur, acutely aware of the storm he had recently stirred within his mother, chose not to press her. He understood all too well that his actions had ignited her anger time and again. With a resigned sigh, he turned on his heel, ready to retreat from the uncomfortable atmosphere.
“Don’t be in such a hurry.”
The authoritative voice of Charles resonated through the hall, commanding attention as he made his entrance. Leaning on a polished cane, he was flanked by two men who appeared to be his personal assistants, their expressions a mix of professionalism and concern. The moment Arthur caught sight of his grandfather, a surge of instinct drove him forward, eager to offer his support.
“Grandpa, let me help you,” he urged, stepping closer.
Charles met his offer with a disapproving glare, yet he relented, allowing Arthur to assist him into the room.
As Jennifer caught sight of Charles, her heart skipped a beat. His unexpected arrival was a jolt to her composure. She hadn’t anticipated his visit, especially not at such a critical moment. Her gaze flickered nervously to the marriage certificates she had deliberately placed on the table, a calculated move aimed at provoking Madilyn. The thought of Charles discovering them sent a wave of anxiety crashing over her. What if he saw them and erupted in fury, demanding that she and Arthur annul their marriage on the spot?
For a fleeting moment, she considered snatching the certificates away, but before she could act, Madilyn stood up, her voice cutting through the tension. “Charles, what brings you here? If you’d let us know you were coming, I would have had Arthur arrange for your transportation personally.”
“There’s no need for that. I’m perfectly capable of managing on my own,” Charles replied curtly, his tone leaving little room for argument. With Arthur’s assistance, he made his way to the sofa, lowering himself into its embrace with a practiced grace.
As he settled in, his gaze fell upon the marriage certificates resting on the table. Instantly, his expression soured, and a shadow of displeasure crossed his features.
Jennifer felt a knot tighten in her stomach, her anxiety mounting. Seizing the moment, Madilyn chimed in, “Charles, today is quite special. Arthur and Jennifer have officially registered their marriage.”
Charles remained unresponsive, his silence heavy and foreboding.
Noticing his lack of reaction, Madilyn raised her voice just a notch, her tone dripping with condescension. “Arthur is all grown up now—he no longer requires his parents’ guidance. He has his own plans. Since he has chosen to marry Jennifer, all I can do is wish them happiness. From this point forward, Jennifer will be responsible for managing the household affairs.”
Madilyn turned her gaze to Jennifer, a thin smile playing on her lips. “Isn’t that right, Jennifer?”
Jennifer could practically hear the smugness lacing Madilyn’s words. The underlying message was clear—Madilyn was deliberately provoking Charles while deftly shifting the burden of responsibility onto her shoulders.
But Jennifer was not one to cower easily.
