Chapter 47 The Hospital Confrontation
Findshed
Chloe and Robert were sharing some desserts when Arthur’s voice cut through the quiet room. St. Mary’s Hospital had truly impressed her–she’d merely asked about sweets, and a nurse arrived with a full selection
for them.
Just as they were relaxing, Arthur’s sharp tone broke the calm.
Chloe frowned. She’d finally found some peace–why was she hearing his voice again? She thought she’d left that man behind for good.
“What’s this performance about, Chloe?” Arthur snapped the moment he saw her sitting comfortably. He was fuming. On his way there, he’d been so frantic he nearly drove into a streetlamp.
Despite everything, Chloe had once been his wife. Even after the divorce, hearing she was in some kind of accident had worried him.
He’d rushed into the hospital, almost tripping on the stairs in his haste. He’d been terrified–scared he’d find her lifeless, beyond help.
For one brief moment, he’d even thought that if she made a scene, he might let it slide–as long as she was okay.
But what did he walk in on? A cozy scene of a mother and son lounging in a hospital bed, casually enjoying desserts. Was this the “serious accident” he’d been told about?
Arthur saw red. Has Donald lied to me?
He’d raced over here only to find this—was it all a setup to see if he still cared? Was she testing him?
If this was her idea of playing games, she’d gone too far.
Chloe stared at Arthur in the doorway, momentarily stunned. Then her face twisted in pure disgust.
“What’s your problem, Arthur?” she fired back. He was glaring at her like he wanted to strangle her.
“I should be asking you that! Did you stage all this just to get my attention? You wanted me to come running?” Arthur marched to the bedside, his eyes sweeping over her. Aside from some bandages, she looked perfectly fine. Was this the “nearly crushed by a truck” accident he’d heard about?
The more Chloe listened, the more annoyed she got. “Who wants your attention? Who do you think you are?” she shot back coldly. “Who even let you in? Weren’t you the one who said we were over and you never wanted to see me again?”
“So this is the ‘almost crushed by a truck‘ situation Donald mentioned? You look completely fine. Could you be any more dramatic?” Arthur retorted. “I never thought you’d sink this low just to get me to notice you.”
“Donald? You had someone tailing me?” It finally clicked. Chloe almost laughed at the absurdity. He hadn’t come to see if she was hurt; he’d come to accuse her of not being injured enough.
“I…” Arthur showed no remorse. “Someone like you isn’t worth following. I just didn’t want you using my name to scam people and ruin the company’s reputation. You think I care about you? Don’t flatter yourself.”

“Arthur, are you really this full of yourself, or are you having some early midlife crisis?” Chloe’s expression darkened. “I want nothing to do with you. Even if I staged an accident to get attention, it would be to catch the eye of someone worthwhile–not you.”
She turned away, popping the last piece of dessert into her mouth. The sweet taste lifted her mood instantly.
