Arthur stood on the sidewalk, watching Chloe’s sports car disappear down the street. He’d seen that car before–parked right outside the courthouse. So she really bought it for herself.
One hundred eighty million dollars… That kind of money could last her a long time.
Once she runs through it all, I’ll see how fast she comes crawling back to me for cash.
Just wait, Chloe. When that day comes, I’ll make you apologize and admit that all of this is
“Arthur, let’s get Jenarth registered,” Jennifer said, pulling him out of his thoughts.
He nodded quietly.
your fault.
They walked into the school and filled out the forms. To keep things simple, Arthur asked if Jenarth could join Robert’s class. He told the teacher it might help both boys settle in.
“Hey Robert, I think I just saw your dad–but he was with some new kid. Isn’t that weird?” A girl with hair tied in two buns leaned closer to Robert, her eyes curious.
“He’s not my dad,” Robert said without looking up. He kept his focus on the lump of clay in his hands. “My last name’s Lewis. His is Myers. We don’t even share a last name.”
“Wait, your last name is Lewis now? Since when? How come I didn’t know?” She tilted her head. “So who is your dad? Do I know him?”
“When I find him, you’ll be the first to know,” Robert said, shaping the clay faster.
“Okay, but you have to tell me as soon as you know! I’ll be so happy for you.” She giggled. “You’re the coolest, Robert.”
“I know I’m cool. Don’t have a crush on me,” Robert said with a grin, handing her a small clay flower.
“Wow! Robert, you’re amazing!” She took the flower and gave him a quick hug.
Robert’s cheeks flushed pink, but he played it cool. “I told you not to have a crush on me.”
Just then, Jenarth walked into the room with the teacher. The first thing he noticed was the girl with the buns standing close to Robert, gazing at him like he was a star.
The moment Jenarth’s eyes landed on Robert, they turned cold.
“Boys and girls, settle down,” the teacher said. “This is Jenarth Myers. He’s new here.”
Jenarth stepped forward, gave a small bow, and spoke clearly. “Hi, I’m Jenarth Myers. You can just call me Jenarth. I’m really happy to be here and make new friends.”
“Hi, Jenarth!”
“Welcome!”
The room buzzed with cheerful voices.

The teacher showed Jenarth to an empty seat and reminded the class, “Remember, Jenarth is allergic to eggs, so please be careful during snack time.”
Even though he was a bit younger than most, Jenarth was outgoing and friendly. He quickly became the center of attention.
When class ended, a group of kids gathered around him. But Jenarth’s eyes were fixed on the girl with the buns–still hovering near Robert. He politely turned down the others and walked straight over.
“Robert, can you help me with this math problem?” She slid her notebook toward him.
Robert glanced at the page, but before he could speak, a voice cut through.
“Robert!”
He ignored it. “The answer’s eight,” he told the girl.
