Chloe texted back, “Ignore them. The more they act like this, the better–they’d better stay stuck together forever and never split up. That way, they won’t come to annoy us.”
Chloe had just sent the message when her phone began to vibrate.
She stared at the string of digits flashing on the screen, her expression darkening. She couldn’t even remember how long this number had been buried in her contact list.
It was her father, Scott Lewis.
What perfect timing–calling now, undoubtedly after seeing the online news about Arthur publicly acknowledging his wife and child.
The phone kept buzzing, stubborn and demanding, refusing to be ignored.
Chloe watched it ring, not caring at all. She only picked up at the very last second, right before it kicked to voicemail.
“Chloe, where are you now?”
Before she could utter a word, Scott’s furious voice exploded through the speaker.
“I’m about to leave work. What do you need?”
Her calm reply only fueled his anger. “You could have been the lady of the Myers household. Why are you out working some crummy job? What the heck is this nonsense? Get back right now! What is all this mess online? Who is this Jennifer? And whose child is that? Get home. Now!”
The line went dead, his rage still echoing in her ear.
Chloe stared at her phone, Scott’s furious tone replaying in her mind. She could easily picture him standing in the living room, hands on his hips, fuming.
When she returned to the Lewis family, there was bound to be a storm of conflict!
It had been six years!
From the day she married Arthur until now, her biological father had been largely absent from her life. The most prominent memory was when she nearly died giving birth to Robert, and even then, his primary purpose seemed to be discussing business with Charles.
Charles had always doted on her. When it came to money and status, Charles never refused to help the Lewis family. When they were drowning in debt, it was Charles who rescued them.
She owed Charles for that. The 18 million dollars her mother had left her had been controlled by her stepmother, Monique Lewis. It was only Charles’s authority that forced Monique to finally hand it over.
She had few memories of Scott. She’d gotten lost as a child, and it was her mother who had never stopped searching for her, pouring all her energy into finding Chloe and neglecting her husband. That neglect gave Monique the opening to sneak in, bear him a daughter named Carolyn, and demand a place in the family.

Her mother, unable to bear the double blow of a lost child and a cheating husband, died heartbroken.
After Chloe was found and brought back to the Lewis family, she barely had time to settle in before she was married off to the Myers family. Now, six years later, the Lewis Manor appeared even more imposing than before.
When Chloe arrived at the gate, the housekeeper came out to ask whom she was visiting.
“Ms. Lewis!” A figure rushed over, grabbing Chloe’s hands, her eyes lighting up with exciternent.
“Starla!” Chloe smiled warmly at the middle–aged woman, Starla Caldwell.
Starla had served the Lewis family since Chloe’s mother was alive and was still here now.
“Ms. Lewis, you’ve finally come back! Please, come inside quickly! Your father is home.” Starla was so excited she practically pulled Chloe inside.
Watching Starla discreetly wipe away a tear, Chloe felt a pang. Perhaps Starla was the only person in this house genuinely happy to see her return.
“Sir, Ms. Lewis is back.”
In the living room, Scott sat rigidly, his anger palpable. On the plush sofa beside him sat Monique, impeccably dressed, with Carolyn next to her, projecting an image of sweet gentleness.
Hearing Starla’s words, all eyes turned toward Chloe.
The moment Scott saw Chloe, fury flashed in his eyes. The looks from Monique and Carolyn, however, were pure hatred.
What a farce.
