“You…” Scott stared at the document in her hand, confirming its authenticity. Fury shot straight to his head, and he nearly collapsed on the spot.

“Scout!” Monique leaped up, rushing to support Scott before he could fall.

“Dad!” Carolyn hurried to his other side.

They each took an arm, guiding him back into his chair. Monique frantically rubbed his chest, terrified he might have a heart attack.

“Chloe, you just got home. If you have something to say, can’t you say it nicely? Why do you have to deliberately make Dad so angry?” Carolyn’s voice was soft, but every word was carefully laced with accusation aimed at Chloe.

“Chloe, how could you hide something this important from the family? You even got the divorce finalized without telling a soul,” Monique chimed in, her tone dripping with feigned disappointment. “We had to find out through tabloid gossip, just like strangers. That’s completely unacceptable.”

“What would have changed if you had known? The outcome would be the same,” Chloe replied flatly.

“How could you be so…” Monique sighed dramatically, squeezing Scott’s hand. “Scott, how could Chloe be so reckless? The Myers family treated her so well. How could she just throw it all away?”

“And look at you now!” Scott’s breathing had steadied, but his face contorted with fresh anger at Monique’s prodding. He glared at Chloe’s professional attire, his displeasure evident. “You said you’re working? What job? You could have lived a life of luxury as the lady of the Myers household. Why lower yourself to this? Do they need your paycheck? Aren’t you afraid of becoming a laughingstock if this

gets out?”

“Chloe, what’s with that outfit? Is that some kind of sales assistant uniform?” Carolyn asked, her voice sickly sweet as she continued to support Scott.

“You’ve brought shame on the entire Lewis family,” Scott spat, jabbing a finger toward Chloe. “And what about Robert? Where have you taken him? I heard you insist on keeping him with you. Do you even understand? Robert is the legitimate heir of the Myers family. By cutting him off from them, you’re ruining

his entire future!”

Scott started gasping for air again halfway through his tirade.

“Scott, calm down.” Monique and Carolyn helped him slump onto the sofa. Monique looked at Chloe and shook her head in faux despair. “Chloe, your father only wants what’s best for you. Why can’t you see that?”

Chloe ignored them, walking past and settling coolly on the sofa opposite.

If they wanted to perform, she’d watch. She’d like to see how far Monique and Carolyn were willing to take this charade in her presence.

It was a picture of Jennifer, lost in concentration while playing the piano. But the camera’s focus was squarely on the enormous diamond ring glittering on her finger.

Chloe glanced at it and recognized it instantly–the very ring Arthur had slipped onto her finger the day he knelt before Charles and pledged his vows. Their wedding day.

When she left the Myers family, Chloe had taken nothing that reminded her of Arthur. She had no idea if Arthur had gifted the ring to Jennifer, or if Jennifer had simply helped herself.
