Arthur gave Jenarth a soft hug. “How could I ever be upset with you? You’re a great kid.”

As he held Jenarth close, Arthur’s thoughts wandered back. He remembered Robert, much smaller then. always asking for a hug. Back in those days, Arthur was always swamped. He’d tell Chloe to take care of the kid and rush out the door for work. He could barely recall Robert’s expression and the look in Chloe’s eyes

Remembering Jennifer’s words, Arthur carefully passed Jenarth over to her.

“I’m beat today. I’m heading up to my room. Let Sarah help you get your things unpacked. And don’t pull a stunt like that again.”

“Of course, Arthur. It won’t happen again.” Jennifer wore a soft smile, her face radiant–no sign remained of the tears she’d cried just minutes earlier.

Arthur gave Sarah a few quick instructions to help Jennifer unpack, then turned and headed upstairs.

Jennifer stood watching him go. He looked so worn out.

A sly little smile touched her lips.

She’d thought winning Arthur over would cost her more. But it had been surprisingly easy.

Arthur belonged to her and her alone–no one else should even dream of him!

Sarah came over for the luggage. Jennifer’s face turned cool. “Be careful with that. My dresses and jewelry are in there.”

“Yes, Ms. Williams.” Sarah nodded politely and carefully lifted the suitcase before leaving.

Jennifer watched her go, a cold glint in her eye. That old hag always treats me like an outsider–just you wait! In a few days, I’ll make these lousy servants change their tune and call me Mrs. Myers.

She’d show everyone who was really in charge here.

Just then, the phone rang. Jenarth heard it and tugged on Jennifer’s sleeve.

Jennifer picked up the phone and glanced at the screen. She knew exactly who it was.

Well, perfect timing. She’d been planning to call, but it seemed the other party couldn’t wait.

Jennifer flopped lazily onto the sofa and answered the call.

“Jennifer, you’ve got some nerve. Did you really think I wouldn’t figure out you were behind all those leaks?”

Madilyn’s shrill voice screeched through the receiver. Jennifer rolled her eyes and held the phone away

“Are you finished?” Jennifer finally cut in, after Madilyn had run out of steam.

“Jennifer, what exactly are you trying to say?”

“I just want to ask you, Mrs. Madilyn Myers, what’s the point of this call?” Jennifer let out a light laugh. “I told you I’d get that woman out of the picture for good. And I did, didn’t I?”

“You…”

“It doesn’t matter how I managed it. Chloe is gone from Arthur’s life. You should be happy about that, at least.” Jennifer lowered her voice. “I thought we were on the same side here.”

As she spoke, Jennifer lifted her hand, admiring the diamond ring on her finger. Arthur hadn’t asked for it back. That was as good as saying it was hers now.

“Jennifer, don’t you dare dream about—”

Before Madilyn could finish, Jennifer chuckled. “Chloe’s a lucky one, isn’t she? You sent a truck to run her over, and she still made it. What a pity.”
