Chloe signed the receipt quickly. “Thanks,” she said simply.
Finisher
Nancy just stood there, stunned. This didn’t make any sense. Wasn’t Chloe supposed to be broke? Wasn’t she the one who had a huge fight with her family just to get some basic living money?
And now she’d just paid ten million for a necklace like it was nothing.
Nancy turned to Carolyn, completely lost. “What is going on?”
Carolyn was just as confused. Her eyes had gone wide when the payment was approved. How was that possible? Where did Chloe get that kind of money?
“Chloe, where did you get that money?” Carolyn demanded, her voice sharp with irritation. “A few days ago, you were ready to disown your family over cash. Now you’re spending it like this?”
“Yeah, where did it come from?” Nancy echoed, backing her friend up.
Chloe handed the signed receipt back to the clerk. She looked at the two of them coolly. “I earned it. I work for my money.” She then turned her focus back to Nancy. “Anyway, I’ve paid for the necklace. Ms. Steffes, you said if I bought it, you’d buy out this entire jewelry counter, right?”
Upon hearing this, Nancy quickly chickened out and took an unplanned step back.
“Everyone here heard you,” Chloe continued, glancing at the clerk. “Ms. Steffes was so insistent about boosting your sales. I couldn’t have stopped her if I tried!”
The clerk smiled politely at Nancy, playing along. “Ms. Steffes, shall we arrange to have all the pieces delivered to your address?”
Nancy’s face flushed a deep red. She suddenly regretted ever becoming a VIP here and giving them her home address.
She was filled with regret. She shot a furious look at Carolyn. This was all her fault! She was the one who said Chloe was desperate and had no options.
Paying ten million for a necklace with a single swipe–that was desperate? Was Carolyn just playing her for a fool?
“Chloe, you set me up!” Nancy accused, glaring. “You knew you could pay all along! You tricked me!”
“Don’t flatter yourself,” Chloe replied, her calmness a stark contrast to Nancy’s anger. “Do you really think I have time for these tricks? You were the ones so eager to embarrass me, and now you’ve embarrassed yourselves. Ms. Steffes, it’s time to pay up. Let’s go! Everyone is waiting.”
Nancy’s face turned an even deeper shade of red. She felt completely exposed and wished the floor would
swallow her.
What was she going to do now?
She was the Steffes family heiress. If word of this got out, her reputation would be ruined.
Chapter 95 The Hidden Grand Prize
Nancy pinched Carolyn’s arm hard. This was all Carolyn’s idea, and now she was stuck.
Carolyn! Do something!
Finished
Carolyn gritted her teeth against the pain. She looked at Chloe, putting on a mask of innocent curiosity. “Chloe, just a few days ago you were scrambling for money. Now you drop ten million without a second thought. What kind of job lets you make that much so fast?”
She deliberately raised her voice so the nearby shoppers could hear.
A woman, broke one day and rich the next, especially one with Chloe’s looks… People were bound to start thinking the worst.
Chloe saw right through Carolyn’s attempt to stir up trouble. Her eyes turned cold. “You really want to know?”
“Of course! I’m just curious. Anyone would be, seeing that much cash appear out of nowhere!” Carolyn met her gaze, her smile sweet but her eyes sharp.
“Me?” Chloe smiled back at Carolyn’s scheming expression. “Let’s just say I’ve been incredibly lucky lately. I hit the jackpot!”
Carolyn’s face soured. That was an obvious lie.
The jackpot? Could she be any more ridiculous?
