98 The Reversed Trap

“The girl I like wouldn’t struggle with such a tiny problem,” Eugene said with a lazy smirk, looking completely unconcerned.

“You call this a tiny problem?” Landon stared at him in disbelief. Was he serious?

If Chloe stepped out of the boutique with unpaid merchandise, the mall’s security system would trigger instantly. The system was linked directly to the police–once the alarm sounded, officers would arrive within three minutes.

When that siren blared, every shopper in the mall would turn to stare. With stolen goods found on her, Chloe would have no way to explain herself. Then the hidden grand prize someone set up earlier would be for nothing.

Landon wanted to argue, but he was just an employee. The boss was right here–if Eugene didn’t give the order, he didn’t dare act on his own.

Come on, Chloe, you can get through this!

If the police really took her away, Landon would have to find a way to bail her out.

Inside the boutique, Chloe gracefully accepted the luxury shopping bag from Nancy. She thanked the manager and prepared to leave.

“Ms. Lewis, let me walk you out! I can give you a quick tour of the mall on the way,” the general manager offered with a smile, eager to show her around before she departed.

Chloe smiled and agreed.

Nancy quietly moved aside. She exchanged a triumphant glance with Carolyn, her eyes shining with satisfaction. She was all smiles, ready to watch Chloe’s humiliation. Any moment now, Chloe would wish the ground would swallow her whole.

The moment the alarm sounded, everyone in the mall would know someone had tried to steal.

Just as Chloe was about to step out, she suddenly stopped.

“Ms. Steffes!” Chloe turned and called out to Nancy, who was still standing nearby.

Nancy met her gaze and tensed up. Had Chloe discovered something?

Chloe walked over, looked at the nervous Nancy, and smiled gently. “I almost forgot!”

“What is it?” Nancy asked, her voice slightly unsteady.

Chloe reached out and lightly patted Nancy’s shoulder, her smile widening. “Your apology just now was so sincere. I forgive you.”

Nancy was fuming inside. This woman is way too arrogant. Just wait–she’ll be crying soon.

“Ms. Lewis, I’m so glad you forgive me. Let’s go shopping together next time,” Nancy said, forcing her most charming smile.

Chloe returned the smile. “I’m looking forward to it.”

With that, Chloe turned and left with Robert.

Nancy and Carolyn exchanged excited looks, barely able to hide their glee.

Just wait, Chloe. You’ll make a fool of yourself right away!

They watched as Chloe walked away, exiting the jewelry boutique alongside the mall manager.

But the alarm never sounded. Chloe left completely undisturbed.

The alarm should have triggered instantly–Nancy was certain of it. She stared as Chloe walked off, but nothing happened.

“This is strange!” Nancy frowned. She had personally slipped that ruby ring into Chloe’s pocket. Why hadn’t the alarm gone off?

“Why isn’t it working?” Carolyn whispered, ensuring only Nancy could hear. “Nancy, are you sure you put it in her pocket?”

“Are you doubting me?” Nancy shot Carolyn an annoyed look. “I never make mistakes. I’m one hundred percent sure it’s on that woman.”

“Then why didn’t the alarm sound?” Carolyn was completely baffled as she watched Chloe walk away unharmed.

Nancy gritted her teeth, thinking about how she’d humbled herself to apologize earlier. The more she thought about Chloe getting off scot–free, the angrier she became. All that acting for nothing!
