He Watched Me Shine Without Him novel Chapter 68

Rose shook her head. "No, I do have expectations."

Maxwell's eyes filled with sarcasm.

Rose continued, "I expect a stable and peaceful life," she said sincerely.

Maxwell's expression froze.

If Rose were from a poor family, her lack of interest in fame and fortune would have been highly favored. However, the Clarke family, like a tyrannosaurus rex in the business world, had built our empire through hard-fought battles. I did not appreciate a girl who seemed so unambitious.

"Rose, I heard you cured Houston's insomnia?" When he asked this question, his stern expression softened slightly.

Rose replied honestly, "It might not be entirely my doing. Houston has a strong ability to self-regulate. Maintaining a stable mindset is the key."

Maxwell could not find any real benefits for Houston in marrying Rose.

He suspected that Rose had not fully understood the depth of Houston's condition.

Houston's illness was not just simple insomnia. If it weren't for his prestigious status, a girl from an ordinary family would not dare to marry him.

He probed further, "Do you know the details of Houston's medical condition?"

Rose said, "It's my professional knowledge. I believe I am familiar with it."

Maxwell, however, looked unconvinced and continued to probe, "As far as I know, mental illness is a complex and difficult condition. It can't be completely cured and may recur at any time. If Houston faces hardships in life and unfortunately relapses, do you have the confidence to cure him?"

The authority on his face as a person of high status instantly turned into the affection and pity of an elder for a younger generation.

Rose replied straightforwardly, "I can't guarantee that I can cure him."

Maxwell's face instantly turned cold.

Rose continued, "But I can promise never to give up on him."

The old man's expression softened again. He looked at Rose, realizing that to test her, he would have to reveal some of Houston's hidden cards.

"Rose, as a doctor, can you honestly tell me, is Houston's condition optimistic?"

I really want to know if Rose will despise Houston if she knew the true cause of his illness.

Rose fell silent.

A long silence.

Maxwell wondered, is it still about the Clarke family's status?

Such an outstanding Ryan deserved a girl with more ambition and drive.

Since Rose couldn't be Ryan's partner in business, she should at least be his supportive wife.

He was shocked.

Many wealthy young ladies would do anything to marry Houston, all for the sake of selling their wombs for the generous rewards from a wealthy family.

"Tell me why."

Rose said seriously, "Sir, people live in this world to realize their own value and pursue their goals. And everyone's desires are different. Some people pursue money, some care about status, but I just want to be dedicated to my work. For me, researching pathology, curing patients, or making significant discoveries in academia is more meaningful than being a subordinate of the Jefferson family."

Maxwell was stunned.

He doubted that Rose might not have understood his meaning.

"Rose, do you know what kind of reward you can get for being a full-time housewife in the Jefferson family?"

Rose stood up, "Sir, I'm sorry, no amount of reward will make me agree to your request. I will not give up my job. If I have children, it will be because I love Houston and willingly have children for him, not a transaction related to money."

After speaking, Rose left in a rage.

Maxwell watched Rose's angry departure, from initial confusion to a knowing smile.

He sighed, "Ryan's judgment is really sharp. This Rose seems gentle and pliable on the surface, but she is such a stubborn and unyielding person at heart."
