Rose's voice came through the phone, slightly out of breath from running too fast, "Hello?"
"Dr. Marshall, you're late," came the voice on the other end.
"I'll be at the hospital right away," she replied.
Rose arrived at the hospital in a disheveled state, only to find an empty seat next to Ethan.
Reluctantly, she took the seat beside him.
Ethan looked at her, his expression filled with sorrow. "Rose, did you change your number?"
Rose hesitated for a moment, then nodded.
"Why didn't you tell me?" he asked.
Rose was speechless and continued to remain silent.
Ethan realized the truth and whispered in disbelief, "Just to completely get rid of me?"
Rose's silence spoke volumes.
Ethan said, "Rose, you're really heartless."
With a stern expression tinged with determination, Rose replied, "Ethan, when you were intimate with Vivian, you should have known that was the end for us. Now, I just want to live my own new life and not be entangled with you or her. Please let me go and do the right thing."
"Rose, can't we really be friends for a lifetime?" Ethan's eyes turned red.
I couldn't accept that the girl who once loved me the most was now trying so hard to escape me.
Rose said, "I'm sorry, but my definition of male friends is just good and bad."
Ethan gave a self-mocking smile, then almost pleaded, "Could you add my WhatsApp? I promise I won't send you messages. I just want to quietly watch your status."
Rose was annoyed. "Ethan, I'm really sorry, but since I've already kicked you out of my life, I absolutely won't play any of those dramatic, ambiguous games. For the rest of my life, I just want to be responsible to Houston."
The director coughed, and Rose and Ethan quickly fell silent.
In the evening, Houston, as usual, arrived early at the hospital to pick Rose up after work.
He had just parked his car at the hospital entrance when he noticed another car parked next to his Marvel.
The window of the other car rolled down, and Houston saw Vivian's face, made up with precision. Her gaze today lacked the usual hostility and arrogance, and for some reason, Houston thought he detected an inappropriate sweetness in her eyes.
For a girl with poor driving skills, such a small spot was a severe test of her abilities.
"What happened to you?" she asked worriedly.
Vivian ran to Rose and indignantly complained, "Rose, Houston doesn't know how to cherish women at all. I just asked him to help me to park the car, and he not only refused but also rolled up the window and pinched my finger. Look at my hand. How can you stand being with such a man who doesn't know how to cherish women?"
Rose's elegant face twitched.
I remembered how, a few years ago, Vivian had also complained about my "boyfriend" Ethan being unsentimental while shamelessly getting close to him.
It was because of her excellent acting skills that I had never suspected she would end up with Ethan.
Rose was no longer the naive girl who would be fooled and taken advantage of. She warned Vivian, "You're here to pick up Ethan, right? Why did you suddenly decide to pick him up today? It's quite considerate of you, a pregnant woman, to do so."
A flash of guilt crossed Vivian's eyes.
I had never picked Ethan up from work before. Today, I came to the hospital not because I care about his well-being but because I want to create an opportunity to run into Houston.
"Uh, yes, he's been so busy and stressed lately with his job regularization, so I thought I should show more concern," she lied.
Rose scoffed, "He's just an intern, not even seeing patients. He just does odd jobs every day. Where does he get so much stress from?"
