"The Jensen family can only have one Shannon."
That had been Zane's response more than two years ago when Bianca had suddenly proposed taking Shannon's place as the daughter of the Jensen family.
It'd seemed like a whim at the time, but now, the words struck them vividly.
Bianca had said, "Don't ever let anyone replace her as the Jensen family's child."
So much time had passed since then, and Scott and Hank had been so young. Zane assumed they'd long since forgotten, but they clearly remembered.
When Scott began recounting the conversation they'd had with Bianca, Thalia suddenly remembered something similar Bianca had said to them before they came here as well.
She turned to look at Louise, the only one who might know the full truth. Sure enough, the latter did.
"In the Wynthorpe clan, a fox is born with the ability to perceive the future of heaven and earth once every thousand years."
It had been one of those fox elders who prophesied that a half-demon could one day give birth to a ten-tailed fox with ancestral bloodline and that the demon clan would eventually be wiped out under the Divine Power.
Without that prophecy, Louise would never have gone as far as to produce a half-demon child with the blood of the Ruler of Foxes.
Clearly, the Wynthorpe clan held such prophecies in deep reverence.
"After the previous elder passed, the clan waited a thousand years until the next fox with this gift was born.
"That fox was Bianca."
In the human world, mystic masters could sometimes read a person's future and past life through physiognomy, but those insights were limited to humans.
Very few like Mike could read the destiny of animals, but to peer into the future and past destinies of the demon clan was nearly unheard of. That showed just how rare and precious such a gift was in the demon clan.
Before Shannon appeared, Bianca had been the most gifted of her generation. With her gift of divine foresight, the clan had begun grooming her as the next potential elder.
Since Louise had revealed the secret of Bianca's divine foresight, she didn't intend to hide the truth either. So, she said, "Each prophecy costs a portion of one's lifespan."
The greater the scope of the future ventured into, the longer the lifespan taken. Otherwise, why had the past elder, out of all nine, been the first to pass away?
The prophecy that a ten-tailed fox born of the Divine Power and to predict anything about it was just a step away from peering into the Divine Power itself.
Though Louise had yet to become a ten-tailed fox at the time of Bianca's prophecy, its contents were tied to it. That meant she undoubtedly paid a heavy price.
Realizing this, Shannon no longer asked Scott and the others about their dreamscapes.
As her figure flashed, the Ten-Tailed's domain opened and instantly transported her to where Bianca was.
Seeing this, Benjamin immediately followed and disappeared without a trace.
