Freya made a beeline for the fridge, grabbed a handful of fruit, and slapped together a quick platter.
She hauled it upstairs and gave the master bedroom door a sharp knock.
“Who’s there?” Liam’s voice came through, sounding half-asleep.
Freya didn’t bother answering. She just pounded harder.
“Rose? That you?” Liam called. “It’s late. Can’t it wait ’til morning?”
Through the door, Natalie’s voice was barely audible. “Who’s that?”
“The housekeeper,” Liam said.
“Why’s the housekeeper banging on the door this late?”
“Probably saw the weather’s turning-storm’s coming. Wants me to shut the windows.”
Footsteps shuffled closer. The door creaked open.
Liam stood there in light gray pajamas, his dorky black glasses perched on his nose, a flicker of irritation on his face. “Rose, don’t come knocking at night unless it’s urgent-Freya? What the hell? When’d you get back?”
Freya caught the panic in his eyes and felt a twisted little thrill. “Missed you, babe. Thought I’d pop in to keep you company. Weren’t we talking about trying for a kid? Wanna snack on some fruit and get down to it?”
Liam’s face went from annoyed to downright grim.
Freya smirked. “What’s wrong? Not in the mood? Or are you already booked with a hot date, and I’m crashing your party?”
Natalie slinked over, clinging to Liam’s shoulder like a needy puppy. “Lammy, what’s taking so long?”
‘Lammy?’ Freya shot Liam a look. ‘Real sweet. His own parents don’t even call him that!
She gave a lazy wave. “Hey there, salesgirl. Want some fruit?”
Natalie’s face went white as a sheet. “You’re… the rich lady?”
“Yup. And your ‘Lammy’ is my husband, who’s apparently been playing hide-and-seek. Shocked? Excited?”
Natalie tripped over her words. “I didn’t know… I swear, I had no clue you were married.”
Liam’s jaw clenched. He grabbed Freya’s wrist. “We need to talk.”
He yanked her into the guest room and slammed the door shut.
Freya let out a cold laugh. “What’s this? Gotta keep our marriage under wraps? Or are you just scared your

side chick’s gonna get her heart broken?”
His face was like ice, a far cry from the warm, cuddly Liam she was used to.
“You set this up, didn’t you?” he asked.
“Yup,” Freya said, cool as a cucumber. “Got a problem with that?”
The fruit she’d brought was now a mess, scattered across the floor.
Liam glanced at the spilled fruit, his voice frosty. “You knew about her already, didn’t you?”

“So what if I did?” Freya shot back. “Talking about starting a family with me while you’ve got your girlfriend strutting around our house, wearing my PJs, my slippers, sleeping in my bed. Pretty thrilling, huh, Liam?”
His eyes narrowed. “You’ve been shopping at her store?”
“Oh yeah,” Freya said. “Dropping your cash, swiping your card, boosting your little fling’s sales numbers.”
“So tonight-this whole act, pretending you were out with Lily, then storming back here–was just to catch us in the act?”
Freya locked eyes with him, unflinching. “Liam, you remember what you said when we got married?”
At their wedding, he’d been a wreck. Eyes red, down on one knee, he’d sworn, “Freya, if I ever cheat on you, may I get struck by lightning and die a miserable death.”
But a few years later, here he was, sneaking his mistress into their home.
