Alicia went straight to her bedroom, set up the projector, and watched a movie. By 10:00, she was fast asleep.
She slept soundly through the night, and when she woke up in the morning, she noticed a missed call from the middle of the night.
She froze a moment. ‘Could this be from that couple Fred mentioned? They’re over in Meridia–maybe they had no idea it was the middle of the night for me,’ she thought.
But after double–checking the number, Alicia realized it wasn’t the one Fred had given her.
She didn’t return the call–she never picks up for numbers she doesn’t recognize. If it was really urgent, they’d just call again.
Alicia got ready, made two breakfasts, and brought them to school with her.
After her first class, her phone rang again. She glanced at the screen and saw it was that same number from the middle of the night. She hesitated for a second then answered.
On the other end, a trembling woman’s voice came through, “Hello? Reborn Soul? Are you Reborn Soul?”
Alicia waited a couple of seconds before replying, “Yeah, that’s my online name.”
The woman’s voice was a mix of laughter and tears, making it hard to understand her. “Right, an online name. So, you…”
Before she could finish, the phone seemed to be taken from her.
A man’s voice came through, steady and calm. “Hello, we saw the painting in Meridia and found you through Mr. Fred Baker. I wanted to ask–was the painting you left with Fred made by you, or did you buy it?”
Alicia answered, “When someone found me, I was wrapped up in that blanket–the same one with the painting.”
The man sounded even more serious, “You were found abandoned?”
“Yes,” Alicia replied.
“How old are you?” the man asked.
“Twenty,” Alicia replied.
There was a brief pause before the man spoke again, “Let’s meet up once we’re back in the country, okay?”
Alicia said, “Sure.” That was it, so she hung up the phone. She honestly didn’t like how the man kept grilling her, like she was being interrogated.
Maybe Fred was right–maybe they were a wealthy family, worried she might be trying to impersonate their daughter, but it still felt uncomfortable.

She didn’t give it another thought. With another class coming up, she pulled herself together and headed off
to her next lesson
Four day’s went by, and it was Friday when Alicia’s phone flashed with that same number again. She was having lunch in the cafeteria when she saw the call from that number.
Turning to Sienna, her friend, Alicia said, “I’ve got to step outside and take this call.”
The man’s voice came through, apologetic. “Sorry we’re just getting back to you. My wife got sick, so I couldn’t call earlier.”
“No worries,” Alicia replied.
“Are you free this afternoon? Let’s meet up,” the man said.
Alicia replied, “I’ve got class this afternoon. It ends at four. How about five?”
The man sounded surprised. “You’re still in college?”
Alicia responded, “Isn’t that what people my age usually do?”
‘Or maybe he thinks that since I wasn’t raised by them, my life should’ve been miserable–like I wouldn’t even have the chance to go to university?‘ Alicia wondered.
The man paused, then said, “You’re right, you should be in school. My mistake. Where do you study? Let’s meet somewhere near your school to make it easier for you.”
“Premier Academy. How about the café right across from school? Five o’clock?” Alicia suggested.
“Perfect. We’ll be there right on time,” the man replied.
After hanging up, Alicia went back to the cafeteria and continued eating, but her mind wasn’t at ease. She couldn’t shake the feeling that the man didn’t really want to recognize her.
‘So, did they really just leave me behind on purpose?‘ Alicia wondered to herself. ‘If that’s the case and he wants nothing to do with me, then so be it. I can live with that.’
All she wanted was an answer. She had moved past needing parents. She could support herself, and with Edward around, she already had family. Whether or not her birth parents accepted her didn’t matter.
Sienna noticed that Alicia was feeling down, but since Alicia didn’t talk about it, she didn’t push. Instead, she kept telling jokes to cheer her up.
Alicia felt really touched by Sienna’s kindness. Sienna was always looking out for her without overstepping. She’d only listen if Alicia wanted to talk.
In a past life, Alicia had failed to protect Sienna, but now, with Tiffany gone abroad, she felt like Sienna was finally safe. She had finally protected her.
Alicia smiled and hugged Sienna. “I’m fine, you don’t need to tell any more jokes. These ones are so cheesy, you know?”

Sienna rubbed her nose, a little embarrassed. “Alright, I’ll look up some new jokes and hit you with fresh ones. next time.”
The jokes didn’t make Alicia laugh, but Sienna’s last line finally pulled a smile out of her, and her mood got a bit lighter. “Come on, let’s take a walk around campus. We’ve still got some time before class.”
The two of them walked around the track for a few laps. Sienna complained, “I feel like all the food I ate was for nothing. We’ve walked so much I’ve worked it all off already.”
Alicia gently patted her on the head. “It’s fine. Tomorrow, let’s go get some cupcakes.”
“You’re buying.” Sienna replied.
“Deal,” Alicia nodded. She checked her phone for the time. “Class is about to start. Let’s head back.” The two of them returned to the classroom.
After class, Sienna headed home, but Alicia stuck around in the classroom for another half hour. She left for the café at 4:30. A ten–minute walk got her there at 4:40.
She stood at the café entrance and glanced inside–there were only a few people around, which meant it was quiet enough for a private conversation.
Alicia found a seat and called the number. “I’m at table 20,” she said.
“Alright, we’ll be right there,” the man replied.
Just after hanging up, she heard footsteps behind her. A man and a woman took the seats right across from
her.
Alicia looked up, shocked. It was Eleanor and her husband. She blurted out, “It’s you two?”
Eleanor and Theodore were just as surprised. “It’s you!”
Eleanor looked emotional, but Theodore seemed much calmer—Alicia could see a guarded look in his eyes.
‘Does he think I showed up just because I know who Eleanor is, and now I’m trying to leverage Eleanor’s reputation to reconnect with their family?‘ Alicia wondered. ‘Why does he keep shooting me these weird looks?’
Eleanor reached for Alicia’s hand, gripping it tightly, her voice shaking. “You’re our daughter. You really are.”
Alicia instinctively pulled her hand back. “Let’s get a DNA test first–just to be sure. We can’t risk mixing things up.”
Eleanor was about to nod, but Theodore spoke first. “Your painting skills? They’re definitely Eleanor’s legacy—
there’s no doubt about it.”
