She looked at Theodore, feeling like something was off. It was clear he didn’t really want to accept her, but the moment she mentioned the test, he was so certain she was his daughter.

It felt like he wanted to skip all the formalities and just claim her immediately, as if he didn’t want to go through the necessary steps. Alicia couldn’t shake the uncomfortable feeling.

This time, even Eleanor turned to look at Theodore.

Theodore lowered his gaze, adjusting his black–rimmed glasses. “Eleanor, she really does look like you, especially her nose and mouth.”

Eleanor looked at Alicia. It was true–the nose and mouth were strikingly similar. No wonder she had felt a sense of familiarity upon first seeing her, as if they’d met before.

Eleanor nodded. “Yeah, we really do look alike.” But she still held Theodore’s hand and said, “But we should still get a paternity test.”

Theodore was about to speak, but Eleanor squeezed his hand tighter. “I know you’re worried she might not be our daughter, and you’re afraid I’ll be disappointed, but Theodore, I’m searching for our real child, not just someone to ease my mind.”

Theodore stayed quiet, his grip on Eleanor’s hand tightening. He thought to himself, ‘As long as I don’t do the paternity test with Alicia, Allison will never learn the secret buried for twenty years.

Eleanor smiled gently at Alicia. “When would be a good time for you to do the paternity test?”

Alicia replied, “How about tomorrow?”

“Sounds good,” Eleanor nodded.

After setting the time, Eleanor turned to Alicia again. “I still don’t know your name.”

“Alicia Lawrence,” she replied.

“Alicia,” Eleanor murmured, “That’s a beautiful name.”

Alicia just said, “Thanks,” thinking it was just a polite comment.

“Where do you live? We can pick you up tomorrow,” Eleanor offered.

Alicia replied coldly, I’ll go on my own. Just give me the hospital address.”

Eleanor felt a little hurt by her distance. “You don’t have to be so formal with us. The paternity test is just a formality. I’m sure you’re our daughter.”

Alicia lowered her eyes. “The paternity test isn’t just paperwork. It’s reassurance for both of us. Whether I am

Alicia didn’t answer. Theodore looked at her, then put his arm around Eleanor’s shoulders. “Don’t worry, Eleanor. Alicia’s studying at Premier Academy now.

“It’s an excellent school, and the tuition’s really high. If her adoptive family can afford that, it shows they really care about her.”

Eleanor nodded, visibly relieved. “That’s good. That’s really good.”

Then she added softly to Alicia, “You don’t have to worry. If we turn out to be your birth parents, we’d never stop you from seeing your adoptive family.

“It would just mean more people to love you. And since they raised you so well, we’ll always be grateful to

them.”

Alicia couldn’t help but wonder to herself, ‘Are these two totally out of touch? Do they really never pay attention to anything online?‘

The whole situation with her and Tiffany had played out very publicly online, not just once but several times, even causing trouble for the Lawrence family. Yet, they knew nothing about any of it.

Eleanor was a painter, yet she took no interest in the art world’s gossip.

But Alicia didn’t want to get into any of that right now. She still wasn’t sure if she was their daughter, and even if she was, there was no way she was going to unload her whole tragic story on her birth parents right away.

‘What would they even think of me?‘ she wondered. ‘I’m at Premier Academy–one of the best schools out there. To them, the Lawrence family has been great to me, paying for everything. How could they possibly think I’ve had it tough?‘

So Alicia stayed silent.

Eleanor suddenly asked, “By the way, when I was at your gallery last time, I overheard your friends saying your sister stole your paintings and posted it online. What’s going on with that? Is your sister really that much trouble?”

Theodore gave Alicia a long, thoughtful look. Before she could respond, he gently spoke up. “Eleanor, let’s not hit her with so many questions at once. She might get overwhelmed. How about we just go for dinner instead?”

Eleanor immediately agreed. “Right, it’s getting late. Let’s go grab dinner. Alicia, what do you like to eat?”

Alicia replied, “I’m good, I really need to head out. I’ve got things to do.”

Allison felt a little hurt when she heard Alicia turn them down.

Theodore quickly intervened, “If Alicia’s got things to do, we shouldn’t push her. Let her go if she needs to.”

As she was walking out, she overheard Eleanor say, “Why did you let her go? We finally got to meet our daughter–I just wanted to spend more time with her.”

Theodore calmly replied, “If she really is our daughter, we’ll have plenty of time later. We haven’t even confirmed anything yet. If you push too hard, she might pull away.

“Plus, her adoptive parents are probably waiting for her. She probably hasn’t even told them what’s going on. Let her have some space, or her adoptive parents might start worrying she’ll abandon them.”

Eleanor paused for a moment, then nodded. After a beat, she asked, “By the way, what did you say Alicia’s sister calls herself online? I want to look her up.

“Alicia’s friends mentioned she’s been flaunting Alicia’s paintings and using them to deceive people. What’s the deal with that? Don’t her adoptive parents care about this? Or maybe, they’ve been treating her poorly?”

Theodore didn’t want Eleanor to find out all the drama happening online. He was worried if she knew about the tough situation Alicia had been in with her adoptive family, she’d end up resenting the Lawrences.

He didn’t know much about the “Sweetheart Queen” controversy–he wasn’t involved in the art world–but after their visit to the gallery, on a strange impulse, he had looked up Alicia online.

Seeing all the trouble Alicia had been through made him feel for her. He never expected her to be Eleanor’s daughter.

He gently placed his arm around Eleanor’s shoulders and said, “Eleanor, don’t overthink it. The fact that this whole thing is all over the internet shows her adoptive parents have been involved and handling it.

“If they didn’t care about her, they would have used their position to pressure her into giving up her paintings for her sister. But the truth is out, and that shows her adoptive parents stood by her and made sure she got the fairness she deserved.”

Eleanor thought about it for a moment and nodded, feeling reassured.

Theodore smiled gently. “So, what do you want to eat? Let’s grab a bite.”

Eleanor, in a much better mood, said, “I’m in the mood for spicy food tonight.”

Theodore laughed. “You know, my mom’s an expert at spicy dishes. We should go back to my hometown sometime and let her cook for you.”

Since Theodore’s parents had taken Eleanor’s child and given her away, Eleanor had cut ties with them.
