He’s an Alpha She doesn’t Care novel Chapter 16

She was not going to go to that pack’s hospital, and there was no need for it either. She’d been here for five days now, and she would be released to her home in just two or three days, once the antibiotics were finished. The wound in her side still hurt when she moved but nowhere near as much as her knee if she was completely honest.

The surgeon had done a fantastic job, and the knee, unfortunately, was going to have to heal slowly on its own. She’d been told with the injury she had a minimum of 12 weeks for it to heal, and she would have to wear a brace for probably six to eight weeks of that. Though the brace itself would be downgraded as the weeks passed and there was less pain and more stability in the knee itself.

She knew the physio was going to try her with a new brace to go home, one that was more manageable, a pull–on brace that had an opening to go over her knee but still had metal springs down either side of the knee. He’d shown her a picture of one; it was designed to help support MCL injuries.

Though he’d also told her that, her walking five blocks to and from the office wasn’t going to be doable for probably the first four weeks, and her surgeon had been there to hear that, and he’d advised at least another week off work for her surgical wound to fully heal as well. So, she was getting a week’s break after this week in the hospital.

That was fine with her. She had plenty of sick leave up her sleeve. She rarely, if ever, got sick, part of her wolfen lineage even though she was wolf–less. She looked at Jared sitting in that chair next to her bed and wondered why he thought she would go anywhere with him. She now realized as she looked from him to Dwane, who was now casually leaning on the door to four bed ward, and she did suppose it was his real name, that he was going to be Jared’s Beta. He definitely wasn’t the Gamma because he’d not touched her or tried to use that Goddess given charm on her.

He was relaxed and assured of his position, and that she’d never seen him before. That had to mean he was one of Jared’s unit. She’d seen over the years all of Edwards‘ sons and their unit’s bar this one. He smiled at her as he leaned there on the door frame, and she knew he was assured that they were going to get what they wanted, as all Alphas and their units were.

Her eyes moved back to Jared once more, and she wasn’t at all interested in going anywhere with him, not even with the assurance that Edward wasn’t going to initiate her into the pack. That he understood he was making her go there, and she wasn’t setting foot inside it willingly. “You can both leave.” She finally stated simply and turned her eyes from him once. more to look out the window.

The day was bright and sunny and there were no signs of that storm and all the rain that had happened last week. She could even see there were birds out there flying around chirping happily, and people walking about in the garden, staff drinking coffee and hospital patients with their families sitting out there as well.

“I’m not going anywhere with you, Mr Hayes, I don’t know you anymore than I know that man over there, that lies about being my brother. Lies I’m guessing to get the hospital staff to release me into his care, but anything could happen to me if I leave with a stranger.” She reiterated her stance for him to hear as much as she had his own Beta before.

“Father is insisting that I bring you in,” he kind of half muttered.

That made her snort as she looked out the window. She could only guess that it was an order from Edward, and he had to obey. She wondered what else was attached to that demand. If this was Edward’s way of punishing his own son for seeing that she opted not to attend that Luna Ceremony and therefore, she’d not been initiated into the pack when Edward had finally thought he’d gotten what he’d wanted, only to have his son screw it all up.

“I foresee that being very difficult for you, or… anyone that I don’t know.” She stated simply, though there was full amusement in her voice now.

“Do you mind not being so rude?” he asked.

That made her turn and look at him. “I’m rude.” She thought absently, after all he’d done, he had the hide to call her rude and she was a rogue. She didn’t take orders from anyone unless she actually wanted to. “I don’t take orders from you, Mr Hayes. You have no say over me at all. Don’t even live or work here in San Francisco, now do you.” she shook her head “You can leave, take that man with you if he’s one of yours. Because I’ll be staying here until I’m officially discharged to go home. To you, I’m just a… she thought about that, how to put wolfen rogue in human terms. “A nonessential casual employee, and no one will miss me,” she reminded him of the very words he’d text her himself. “Please leave.” She stated once more “I’ll not be changing my stance.”

“Father is worried about you,” Jared stated, narrowing his eyes on her. He’d understood her words, I’m a rogue and no one would miss her.

“I’m certain Edward is, but you’re not. You have no concern for me or my health. You made. yourself very clear, I am not someone you want to deal with, and are only here because your father ordered you to be, is my guess… Please go and tell him, I’ll be staying here and then returning to my apartment when discharged.”

Jared was frowning at her now, and she could see that he was thinking about everything she’d stated. He kind of leaned back in his chair as if to make a point that he was going to stay put, or maybe that he was as stubborn as she was.

“May I ask you a different question, a little off–topic Wynta?” he asked after five minutes of complete silence.

“Don’t address me so casually, I’m not your friend, and you certainly have never showed me any curtesy at all during the time I have had to spend with you,” she stated, uncaring of how he took it.

“My question is about that. Why didn’t you wait for me to pick you up like you were told to?”

Wynta frowned at him. Was he ignorant or just plain stupid? But she answered his question just to make it crystal clear to him and that Beta, who was over there listening to their conversation, “Why would I, when you text me not to wait, that you wouldn’t be picking me up, no one would miss someone like me.”

“What? I never texted you that.” Jared frowned instantly himself.

“I’d show you the proof on my phone, though it got ruined a few days ago, but I believe it read ‘I’m delayed, I’m not coming to pick you up, a rogue won’t be missed.‘ She stated those humans weren’t interested she didn’t think in her conversation with this man. One wolfen word wasn’t going to out there kind to the humans.

His frown deepened, “I did not text you that. I didn’t even have your number until I had to track you down after the flash flooding washed you away

That raised her eyebrow. She’d walked away from that pack, but she supposed she’d been admitted to the hospital after getting sucked into floodwaters. “No one else would text me something like that, it came from an unknown number, and you were already an hour late when I got it, so why wouldn’t I think it was you. Seeing as I don’t have your number.”

“I honestly didn’t send you that text message.” He stated, “I can show you my phone as proof.

“You could have deleted it from your phone, Mr Hayes. That is not proof”

“Would you recognize the number?” he asked right back, and she could see that he was actually trying to figure it out. Maybe it hadn’t been him? Was that why he’d been ticked off she’d not been home, why he’d broken into her apartment and collected her dress even?

“No, it was just one text, but it correlated with everything that was going on,” she shrugged.

“I don’t know who sent you that message, Ms Morgan, but the only people I spoke to that day was Dwane, yourself and… Lotti.” He seemed to just trail off, and then he turned and looked at his Beta for a moment, who was also frowning now.

He looked back to her. “Would Lotti have your number?” Jared asked her directly.

“No, I don’t give that out to just anyone.” She shook her head.

“Who has it?” he asked now, “So I can try and find out who sent you that message. It wasn’t me if I had sent it. Why would I have gone into your apartment and collected your dress and shoes? Hunted you down at the office and made you get in my car to attend the wedding?”

“All that proves is you broke into my apartment without my permission and stole my things.” She shook her head. “Nothing more.”

Do you have to be so difficult?” he grated out at her. “You’ll also be coming to the Cedar Rapid Hospital and today.” he stated flatly. She’d insulted him, it seemed, and he didn’t like it.

“No, I won’t.” Wynta shook her head.

“You will, the insurance company sent their doctor with full transfer papers, and it’s all being signed off on as we sit here and talk.” He smiled at her. “It’s just a matter of time.” He stood. “I’ll wait out there with Dwane.”

She glared at him now. Not even she’d be able to argue with the health insurance people about transferring her to their preferred hospital, she didn’t think. Though she knew she was going to try and convince the doctors here, she didn’t want that. She wondered if she could get them to think these people were impostors.

“I’ll give you a moment to accept it and give me a moment to find out who text you and clearly didn’t want you coming to my brother’s ceremony. Something not even I got to attend after all that happened. You disappearing and all,” He stated, “I had to go and look for you instead.” He told her, and then walked from the room.
