Jared
He was standing outside the office, patiently waiting for Wynta to come downstairs. He had a gut feeling that she was going to duck out early to avoid him driving her home. Seeing that he’d upset her, he’d not meant to. It had been light and playful, he’d thought, but she’d not taken it that way, something had clearly gone down with her in those same undertones he could only guess.
So, flirting with her in the workplace was a no–go, which meant that he was likely going to be limited to getting to know her, outside of the office, and being able to play the charming card was only going to be allowed outside working hours. That was annoying for him, most she–wolves didn’t really care about things like that.
An Alpha wolf paying them attention in a fun, flirty way was normally welcomed if they weren’t waiting for their fated mate that was. Not this rogue, his father had said she was quite likable, and he’d gotten to see glimpses of the fun side of her, though he’d been hoping to keep things that way, seems he’d gotten it wrong.
He’d spent the afternoon digging into her history and reference checking her, trying to figure out just what had gone on in her past working history or if she just didn’t want him flirting with her at all. He’d found out all he’d needed to know, she’d been let go from her previous job, a male employee had claimed she’d sexually harassed him, and she’d been let go because of it.
That annoyed him to no end, because he didn’t see her as the type to do that. The girl was work-driven. As she’d stated, her only need was to earn a living to pay her rent and feed herself. He also didn’t see her as the type to chase a man. She might be wolf–less, but she was still wolfen. If she’d ever had s*x with a wolf, a human man wouldn’t compare.
That made him wonder if she did have a human boyfriend though, he’d not considered that, he couldn’t well ask his father that question. The man would instantly turn that to ‘Are you interested, son?‘ And even if he said no, his father wouldn’t believe him.
“Dwane, find out if Wynta has a human boyfriend.”
“That would require stalking the woman, Jared,” his Beta stated from inside the car. He was sitting in the driver’s seat waiting to take them to Wynta’s apartment.
“Hmm, she knows you,” he nodded. “Get Andy or Emerson to do it. She’s not seen either of them yet.”
“You sure you want to do that, if she finds out that could go against you.”
“I’ll blame the old man. She’s not stupid, knows he’s trying to bring her not only into the pack. but see her mated into it. He always invites her to mating balls. She’ll believe it’s his doing without issue.”
“Until she realizes they’re your men,” Dwane stated simply.
“Hmm, I can still blame father.” He shrugged it off with a half smile. His old man had a five–year campaign of trying to get her to a mating ball. Jared wasn’t trying to do that. Hel wasn’t even going to ask her to be initiated at this point, he just wanted to know if he did. decide to actively try and charm her outside of the office and away from prying eyes, would he be stepping on some human toes. He couldn’t see her being with anyone that wasn’t strong and probably dominant.
She was too strong–willed and set in her ways to have a human man that was indecisive, and he, if she had one, was likely to work out and be some sort of nice–looking fellow. He stood up from leaning on the car the moment he saw her get out of the elevator. “I was right,” he told Dwane. “Leaving early to get past me.”
“You did annoy her,” his Beta chuckled softly. “Though I’m surprised she didn’t work late into the night and make you wait around on her for hours.”
He saw her look right at him, and saw annoyance on her face as she walked from the elevator inside the building through the foyer. As she stepped out of the front doors, he reached over and opened the back door for her “Evening Ms Morgan.” He greeted her and kept it formal because that was now expected of him, this was the work place. “Please…” his words trailed off as she walked right past him dismissively.
He heard Dwane snort with full amusement, “Someone’s in the dog house.”
He frowned as he watched her walk over to a taxi that was parked behind his car waiting for its fare. “No, thank you, Mr Hayes.” She stated as she looked at him as she got in that taxi. There was no smile on her face, and he turned and watched her be driven off a full frown on his face.
“Wow, I haven’t ever seen you be shut down so quickly and effortlessly before, boss.” Dwane chuckled.
He hadn’t either. He not known that the taxi was hers, and it wasn’t his place to go and ask either. He snapped the door shut and got in the passenger side, “Well, I guess it’s home for us then.” He dismissed it.
“You going to try again?” Dwane asked with a chuckle.
“Maybe I need to let her cool off. She saw this coming. Perhaps if I let it go, she’ll come around. I’ll try again later in the week,”
“Hmm, now a birdie told me, the Alpha wants you to put yourself near her for the full moon… Are you going to? She’s unknown to you.”
“Unknown to you, Andy and Emmerson. Are you all going to put yourselves near her?” Jared asked in return.
Dwane chuckled. “Touché.”
His father walked into his office and sat down that afternoon. “The full moon, son.”
“Is Saturday, father,” he stated. “What of it?”
“Wynta, you should hang about her place and see. You never know she could be your Mate.”
“I’ll take my entire unit, shall I? They don’t have mates either, and she could be one of theirs.” Two could play that game. “Perhaps father, you should see if they are interested in the she–wolf. Maybe one of them is drawn to her.”
“Are you son?” his father frowned at him.
“I don’t know, I’ve not looked at her like that. There is no point in my book. I could be attracted fiercely to a she–wolf, bed her relentlessly for days on end and come the full moon nothing. And walk away the next day.” He shrugged it off. “Attraction doesn’t imply a fated mate.”
“It could do.”
“Hmm, and I could find that I’m not at all attracted to the one I’m fated to until I scent her out.
He commented casually. “You know how it works.”
“Son, please just humor me, what harm can it do?”
“None, I suppose, answer me a question, father. But why me and not my brothers?” he asked right back.
“Because I think you, when I talk to her, interact with her. You hate women that fall at your feet, unlike your brothers, who both like that, think it’s a quick way to get s*x. You, on the other hand, have more restraint, and, like a challenge, aren’t looking to bed everything in sight. Don’t think I don’t know all those she–wolves on your arm in Europe aren’t contracted for the night.”
He raised an eyebrow at his father now, who smiled at him. “I keep track of my eldest. I also know you’re particular in the women you do bed.”
“Am I now. What particulars do you think I have?” he asked in return.
“You want a woman that is dominant like yourself, because that presents a challenge to you, even in the bedroom that would see a battle for dominance happen.”
“Doesn’t really work like that father, unless they are alpha–blooded themselves, and can hold. their own strength wise. I also don’t generally go around bedding Alpha’s daughters either, regardless of their ascension rank. That just breeds trouble. I’m not looking for that.”
“Hmm, the only son I have that doesn’t do that,” his father nodded. “Show’s you’d make for a good leader to the pack.”
“Well currently, you’ve got Lance winning that race, and I think he’d make a good Alpha as well, was settled even before he found his Mate.”
“Does it bother you son at all that your little brother is in the lead for the seat of Alpha?” his father questioned.
“Not really, I could pip him at the post, father, six months before I turn one hundred. I’m not phased at all,” he shook his head. “I’ve still got 18 years before I’m 100, 20 before Ethan, 22 before Colby and 26 before Lance turns 100.”
“You still have to produce an heir as well don’t forget.”
“Hmm, again, even if I find my Mate at 100, I’d still have two years to get an heir,” he shrugged. “So no father, I’m not in a rush to win the seat. It will go to whoever it is meant to go to. If it’s not me, I do think Lance is actually the best option. He’s level–headed and always.
“Back to the full moon, son, we’re way off–topic.”
He knew that, had been hoping his father would leave the office, forgetting what he’d come down here to talk to him about. No such luck. “What is it you want exactly?”
“Just be within scenting range of Wynta is all. She doesn’t have to see you, and she’s not going to smell you. Can’t actually tell if one is wolfen unless they are right in front of her, got very dulled down senses from my understanding.”
“Right,” he nodded. “I, however, didn’t know she was a rogue until I was inside her apartment, so unless she’s got a window open, I won’t scent her. I have a feeling she installed proper door and window seals in her apartment.”
“Well, have something delivered, son, to the wrong address. I don’t care, just try for me. She’s unknown to you, so you never know.”
He nodded. “Alright.” He shrugged. “Don’t go getting your hopes up, she doesn’t like me much, likely to just reject me if she scents me out.”
“I don’t know about that, she’s mighty stubborn but likely still wants a Mate. Our Kind, even those without wolf, crave the other half of their soul.” “She could already have found that and been rejected by it.” Jared looked at him. “You’re aware of that right.”
He saw his father nod, “I am. That doesn’t mean she wouldn’t give you a chance, and I know you, son, you’re not about to accept or issue a rejection. Not when it will see you as the next Alpha to the pack.” his father smiled at him now.
His father also had him on that one. He would not reject his Goddess Gifted Mate regardless of who she was.
