Jared
It was good to hear Mason was interested in the upcoming mating ball, and he smiled about it. None of his unit were mated off and this could be good for them. They’d not been home in eight years, not moved in any of the pack’s circles for a long time. He’d not known there were two different types of bears and a cougar up in the Obsidian pack. That was interesting to him.
Some new blood to be seen by him and his unit. He’d also not been around for his father’s alliance with the Coral Moon, which had only come about to his knowledge four moons back. When, by chance, one of their wolves had scented out a sea sprite in passing, and an alliance had been struck.
He watched as Mason and his sons all stood up. “We’ll go and speak with Tallah in her office. Just point us in the right direction; there’s no need for an escort. Dwane’s presence might intimidate her,” Mason suggested, his voice steady and confident.
Ernesto nodded in agreement. “I’ll take you to the elevator, but I won’t accompany you down,” he replied, and Jared watched as the four of them exited, their mission clear.
Turning back to his father, Jared felt the weight of the conversation he needed to have. “What transpired between Wynta and Nolan?” he asked, bringing the focus back to the pressing issue at hand.
“Wynta’s father has given her to Nolan, and he’s been playing the part of the doting suitor. If she doesn’t show up at his hotel by 8 PM, her father will come for her, and that’s a situation we definitely want to avoid,” Edward replied, his voice laced with concern. “Things have escalated quickly.”
Jared frowned, confusion knitting his brow. “No one can just hand her over like that. Wynta is of rogue status, and she’s made it clear that she’s an orphan. No one knows who her father is, so how can this be happening?”
Edward sighed, the lines of worry deepening on his face. “It’s likely she was taken from him as a baby. He’s probably been searching for her ever since. If that’s the case, he might have tracked down the person who took her and gotten information from them.”
“We need to act fast and bring her in,” Jared insisted, urgency creeping into his voice.
“Agreed,” Edward replied, “but I can’t force her hand. Wynta and I have an understanding. To maintain her trust, I need to be careful. We must communicate with her about the seriousness of this situation.”
“She won’t know who he is,” Jared said, frustration bubbling beneath the surface. “He could easily mask his scent and walk right past her, then snatch her away without anyone noticing.”
“I’m fully aware of the potential consequences,” his father said with a nod. “I’ll have eyes and ears on Nolan’s hotel. When the Alpha learns that Nolan has failed to retrieve her, I suspect he’ll come here himself, just as Nolan indicated. He’ll likely use scent masking to remain undetected.”
“I’ll call her to my office since I can’t go down there myself,” Jared said decisively. “I need to convince her to come in. She must understand the imminent threat she faces. If it weren’t for those three brothers, she might have already been taken.”
“It’s not just a possibility; it’s a certainty,” Edward added, his tone grave. “We need her here in this office. We all need to sit down with her and discuss the situation.”
Jared pulled out his phone, fingers flying over the screen as he typed a message: ‘Wynta, please come to my father’s office on the top floor. I’ll send Andy to escort you.’ He glanced at Andy. “Please go and get her.”
Andy nodded and exited the office, leaving Jared to wait anxiously. Moments later, his phone buzzed with a response.
‘I’m fine,’ Wynta replied. Jared closed his eyes, counting to ten in an attempt to quell his frustration.
‘It’s not about your injury; it’s about you nearly being snatched off the street,’ he sent back, hoping to convey the urgency.
‘Right,’ was her only reply.
“Stubborn bloody woman,” he muttered under his breath, shoving his phone back into his pocket.
When Wynta finally walked into his father’s office, the atmosphere shifted. She surveyed the room, her expression heavy with resignation, yet she approached the couch and sat down as directed. “I’m fine,” she insisted, her voice firm.
“Maybe you might not have been,” Edward interjected before Jared could speak. “Wynta, you need to understand that this is exactly what we feared. Nolan has made it clear what he intends to do.”
