Winifred froze.
Yvan! What would Yvan want with her? Did that mean he had come to the clinic today specifically for her?
Karen was still talking. "You have no idea the story he cooked up to find you. Said you were sick and he wanted to come see you. I told him off right then and there. I told him you were married, that you even have a child, and that he should just give up. He hasn't bothered you since then, has he? Winifred? Hello? Are you there, Winifred?"
"Huh? No, he hasn't."
"Good," Karen said. "If he does come looking for you, don't you dare talk to him. Stay as far away from him as you can. You hear me?"
Winifred nodded numbly. "I hear you."
"Okay, I'm hanging up," Karen said, then added, "Oh, by the way, Mrs. Spencer wants you to come over for dinner tomorrow. She said she tried calling you but couldn't get through."
"Can you just tell her I'm busy tomorrow and can't make it?"
"You tell her yourself," Karen grumbled. "You two and your mother-daughter drama, making me the messenger. I'm hanging up now."
The phone in Winifred's hand dropped to her side.
So he had come looking for her on purpose. But why? To get back together? To reminisce about old times?
Whatever the reason, Winifred wanted no part of it.
It had been seven years since her relationship with Yvan had ended, and she had tried her best to bury those memories. She thought she had forgotten, but the moment she saw him again, everything came flooding back, as clear as if it were yesterday.
They hadn't even dated for that long, really. Just the second semester of their senior year. And even then, she had only been his girlfriend in name only. They had barely spoken a few words to each other.
At the time, many people suspected they weren't really dating at all, but Yvan had always insisted that Winifred was his girlfriend. The truth remained a mystery to outsiders.
Then came graduation and the final summer break. Winifred had assumed their little agreement would simply dissolve.
