Winifred's movements paused for a fraction of a second. "Not long after graduation."
Yvan's heart ached. Not long after graduation meant she had started dating someone else while they were still in college. It meant she had found someone else not long after breaking up with him.
And here he was, still trapped in that same relationship, unable to move on.
"Was that man on the electric scooter the other day your husband?" he asked, his grip tightening on his fork.
Winifred paused, thinking of Patrick.
She could claim a daughter, but she couldn't randomly claim a husband, especially since Patrick already had a girlfriend. Although Yvan was unlikely to go and confront Patrick, she couldn't risk it.
After a moment's thought, she said, "No, that was just a colleague."
"Then what does your husband do?"
One lie led to another, and Winifred grew impatient. "Mr. Brown, why are you asking so many questions? What does my husband's job have to do with you?"
"I was just asking," Yvan said, looking at her. "We dated once, after all. Can't I show a little concern?"
Winifred let out a cold laugh. "There's no need. Weren't you the one who said we should never contact each other again after breaking up? It's been seven years. The best thing for both of us is to be strangers. I only agreed to this lunch because you saved me and my daughter. After this meal, we should go our separate ways."
Yvan's lips pressed into a thin line. After a long moment, he said, "I was just angry when I said that."
Winifred stiffened, then a small smile touched her lips. "Whether you were angry or not, it's all in the past. I'm married now, and I have a daughter. My family of three is very happy."
His words hit Yvan like a blow. He reached for his cigarettes but then put them back down.
Pretending he hadn't heard, he used the tongs to place some salad on her plate. "Eat some vegetables. You need the vitamins."
Winifred looked at the vegetables on her plate, then back at Yvan.
When Yvan met her gaze, his eyes held a hint of melancholy.
