Cornelia later confronted Winifred again, brazenly warning her to stay away from Yvan.
Winifred found it ridiculous. Yvan was the one pursuing her, not the other way around. What was the point of Cornelia warning her? She was already doing her best to avoid him.
Life went on as usual. One day, on Winifred's day off.
A cold front had moved in, bringing chilly temperatures and a light rain. Winifred decided to stay in, curled up in bed to pass the time.
Just then, Nancy called. "Winifred, are you free right now?"
"I am. What's up?"
"Could you do me a huge favor?" Nancy sounded anxious. "Delia's teacher just called. She has a sudden high fever and a rash on her hands. They think it might be hand, foot, and mouth disease and told me to get her to a doctor right away. I'm swamped here and can't leave, and my mom's not mobile right now. If you have time, could you pick Delia up and take her home? Give her some fever reducer, and I'll be back as soon as I'm done with this patient."
Winifred and Nancy lived in the same apartment complex, and Delia's preschool was nearby. Winifred sometimes helped pick Delia up when she had the time.
Hearing that Delia was sick, Winifred immediately responded, "Nancy, don't worry. I'll go get Delia and take her to the hospital. You stay where you are. Just come to the pediatrics department to meet us when you're done."
"Oh, I couldn't ask you to do that," Nancy said, embarrassed. "It's enough trouble having you pick her up, let alone take her to the doctor."
"Don't be silly, Nancy. Delia being sick is what's important, and I'm not doing anything anyway." Winifred was already getting out of bed. "It's settled. I'm on my way to get her. Bye."
She grabbed her bag and an umbrella and hurried downstairs.
After picking up Delia, Winifred saw how listless and unwell the little girl was and decided to take a taxi straight to Zion Medical Center.
The complex wasn't far from the hospital—just a few bus stops or a ten-minute taxi ride.
But it was rush hour, and the taxi got stuck in traffic just a few hundred yards from the hospital.
