Yvan ignored her anger, his grip on her arm unwavering.
“Winifred, I was wrong seven years ago. I never should have said those things, I never should have hurt you. In all these years, I’ve never been able to forget you. My pride kept me from reaching out, from admitting I was wrong. I thought that with time, I would move on. But I can’t.”
He placed his hands on her shoulders, forcing her to look at him. “It’s been seven years, and now I’m more certain of my feelings than ever. Winifred, I love you, and I want to be with you.”
The intensity of his gaze and the heat of his confession made Winifred’s head spin.
“I love you.” He had never said those words when they were together. Only now, seven years later, did he finally say them.
How ironic.
She brushed his hands off her shoulders, her voice dripping with scorn. “Yvan, is it true that you always want what you can’t have? You say you can’t forget me, but that’s only because I was the one who broke up with you. You never expected that, did you? In your eyes, I was the one who was beneath you, and you were the one on the pedestal. You say you love me, but search your heart. Do you really love me? Or do you just love your pride and your ego? You just want to chase me down and win me back, only to discard me again, don't you?”
If you truly loved someone, how could you let your pride keep you away for seven years?
“No, it’s not like that,” Yvan said, panicked. “It’s not about my ego. I love you. I just love you. If you don’t believe me, we can…”
He grabbed her hand. “We can go get a marriage license right now. I’ll marry you. I want to spend the rest of my life with you.”
Winifred was stunned. “Yvan, you’re insane!”
“I am insane,” he said through gritted teeth. “Winifred, you’ve stolen my heart. Without you, my world is just shades of gray.”
He pulled her into a tight embrace, holding her so close she could barely breathe.
Winifred shoved him away with all her strength.
“Yvan, didn’t you hear me?” she cried out, frustrated. “I can’t be with you. The past is the past!”
Yvan’s voice was filled with pain. “You don’t love me anymore?”
