“I don’t care,” Winifred said. “I’m not planning on getting married anyway.”

“Winifred, are you trying to kill me?” Queena shouted. “I’m telling you, if you don’t get married, you can forget you have a mother!”

Winifred found her mother’s behavior almost laughable. When Winifred had needed her most, she was nowhere to be found. Now that Winifred didn’t need her, she was trying to run her life under the guise of concern.

“Whatever,” Winifred said dismissively. “I barely saw you when I was growing up, and I turned out fine. Now that I’m an adult, having a mother or not doesn’t make much of a difference.”

“Winifred, you think you’re all grown up now, so you can talk back to me? You say I wasn’t there for you, but don’t forget who paid for your food and clothes. And what about that father of yours? Queena’s words pierced Winifred’s heart. “That’s enough, stop it!” she cried.

She slammed the phone down, tears streaming down her face.

Winifred couldn’t remember exactly when, but at some point, her parents started fighting all the time.

The smile vanished from her father’s face, but even then, he would force a smile for her.

Winifred could never understand it. If her father had loved her so much, why did he never come to see her again after the divorce?
