It was already seven in the evening by the time Winifred arrived at Hunter and Queena's house.
Karen was already home. When the doorbell rang, she went to open it and immediately noticed Winifred's red eyes. "Your eyes are so red," she said. "Have you been crying?"
"No, it's just the wind," Winifred said, lowering her gaze. "It's really windy outside."
Karen looked at her skeptically. "It is pretty cold today."
Just then, Hunter emerged from the kitchen carrying a platter of food. Seeing Winifred, he smiled. "Winifred, you're back. Perfect timing! I just finished the last dish. Come on, sit down and eat."
"Thank you, Mr. Reed." Winifred placed a gift box on the table. "Mr. Reed, I brought a little something for you."
"You shouldn't have, but thank you. You're too polite, Winifred." Hunter said, clearly pleased despite his words.
Winifred smiled. "It's nothing expensive, just a set of clothes and some health supplements."
Truth be told, she hadn't spent much time in this house—only during her senior year of high school did she come back daily. Once she started college, she lived in the dorms and only returned for winter and summer breaks.
As a result, her relationship with Hunter wasn't particularly close, but he had always been good to her. And that was just how she was—she treated people well if they were good to her.
She never arrived empty-handed. For holidays and special occasions, she always made sure to get Hunter a substantial gift.
As for Queena, Winifred fulfilled her legal obligations and nothing more.
Queena came out too. Seeing Winifred, her face hardened, and she didn't say a word.
She was still angry that Winifred had told her blind date about her previous miscarriage.
"Come on, everyone, sit down. Let's eat," Hunter urged.
The four of them sat down.
Karen looked at the table laden with fish, shrimp, and a variety of other dishes, all beautifully presented and smelling delicious. She gave her father a thumbs-up. "Dad, you've outdone yourself. Your cooking is getting better and better."
