Chapter 504
Before getting into the car, Damian noticed that Rhea and George were going to drive to the restaurant themselves. After a moment’s thought, he said to Kate, “You can ride with me.”
She flashed him a polite, grateful smile. “Thanks for the offer, Mr. Frost.”
“It’s no trouble at all. We’ve got another translator coming, too,” Damien said.
Soon, Lauren appeared at the hotel entrance and jogged over. Damian’s driver called out, “Hop in with Mr. Frost.
Lauren nodded. “Thanks, Mr. Frost!”
There were four seats in the car. Kate quickly claimed a spot in the back next to Damian, leaving Lauren to sit up front. Kate figured that letting Lauren sit there all alone while she chatted away with Damian in the back would put her in her place and remind her to behave if she wanted to stay at Solaris Ventures.
Lauren fastened her seatbelt, noticing Kate in the back.
The car started moving.
Damian struck up a conversation with Kate. “I heard you’ve got a wide range of hobbies.”
Her confidence swelled at his initiative. Sawyer’s name was proving useful. She smiled and said, “Sort of. I enjoy a variety of artistic pursuits, including music, calligraphy, and painting. My parents got me into them when I was young, and over time, I grew to love them.”
“That’s great. You do strike me as someone who’s into the arts. Such hobbies tend to keep people calm and grounded,” Damian said.
Out of nowhere, Lauren asked, “Mr. Frost, how bad is your short–sightedness?”
Damian blinked, caught off guard. He wasn’t an overbearing boss. He actually enjoyed casual chats with employees, which shaped Solaris Ventures‘ laid–back culture.
“About 200 degrees,” he answered, not brushing Lauren off despite her being just a translator.
She nodded. “You should take care of your eyes, Mr. Frost. Try to avoid looking at things that strain them.”
Like that pretentious trash sitting next to him!
However, Lauren couldn’t stop once she started. “You miss your mom? Go home and hug her picture all day, then. Why come out here and mess up everyone else’s work?”
She didn’t care if she pissed off Damian or got herself fired. She would take any chance to tear into Kate, and she wasn’t about to waste a single second. Missing even one opportunity would make her feel like she had lost the world!
Kate’s expression darkened, and she looked as though she were on the verge of tears. “Lauren, we’re just colleagues. Why do you have to be so cruel to me? Mr. Frost is right here, and you…‘
She was pulling the “Damian” card now!
“Mr. Frost is a fair boss in my book, and he has a sharp eye for what’s right and wrong!” Lauren said, her grin cheeky. “He’s not going to fire me just for calling out a slacker, right?”
Damian could barely hold back his laughter. He cleared his throat to compose himself before saying, “It’s still better for everyone to get along.”
Kate’s brow furrowed. After Lauren’s insults, Damian should have stepped in to scold her. After some thought, she figured that he didn’t want to blatantly speak up for her to prevent people from ganging up on her.
After all, Sawyer was his friend. Kate was sure that he wouldn’t just stand by and let her be bullied. Still, if he fired Lauren outright, it might make it seem that Kate was pulling strings, which wouldn’t look good.
