Things between Rhea and George were so heartwarming and peaceful. However, the serenity was shattered by the clucking of a chicken. It also attracted their attention.
Kate's cheeks burned with humiliation. She was about to turn away and hurry back to the house when someone cried, "Oh, my. You're catching chickens yourself, Ms. Pearson!"
It was Lauren. What was she doing in Rhea's home?
Kate turned back around and sneered. "Rhea, I truly admire your magnanimity. Lauren hurt you so badly in the past, yet you're capable of burying the hatchet and forgiving her. I'm not sure whether to say that you're kind or foolish. You're keeping a rabid dog by your side, after all."
"Regardless of my situation, I'm still doing better than you. At least I don't need to catch a chicken myself." Rhea looked unruffled.
Lauren crossed her arms, ready to jump straight into a fight. "That's right. Even a dog like me doesn't need to do stuff like that. I can just sit around and wait for food to be served to me. Doesn't your precious Mr. Burton love you with all his heart? Why is he making you do these things?"
Kate gritted her teeth. "I want to cook a meal for my husband to show how much I love him. What's it to you?"
As soon as the words were out of her mouth, Sawyer's voice rang out from a distance. "You can deal with the chicken right there. Pluck its feathers and slaughter it."
There was nothing around to muffle the sound, so everyone heard him loud and clear.
Lauren instantly burst into laughter. "Oh, God. I'm truly impressed by your incessant lies, Kate. You're seriously shameless! It turns out that your blissful and perfect life is nothing but a sham. You're just stuck at home doing these things all day! My heart goes out to you, really."
Kate felt utterly humiliated. Sawyer had done this on purpose to embarrass her!
As if that wasn't enough, he came closer in the garden. He nodded at Rhea and George and said, "Ms. Ravelle, Mr. Snider. I'm sorry about this. She was so rude because I didn't keep her in check."
George was unfazed. "It's fine."
Sawyer turned to Kate. "Hurry up and deal with the chicken. Once you're done, we can have Ms. Ravelle and everyone else join us."
What?
Kate's hands balled into fists around the chicken's wings. He wanted to invite them over? Didn't that mean that they'd see the exact predicament she was in?
She couldn't let that happen. Absolutely not!
To her dismay, Rhea chuckled softly. "Thanks for the offer, Mr. Burton."
