Sawyer really didn't care about Kate's dignity at all.
"Done scrubbing?" Sawyer asked. "If you're done, go cook. Did you forget what I told you?"
Kate turned to him, her eyes filled with a desperate plea.
Yet, he ignored it and pressed coldly, "You're not going?"
Her smile stiffened. "Let the maids handle it. This young lady is visiting for the first time. I should stay and accompany her."
"Don't even think about slacking off," Sawyer said, crushing her hopes. "You're just a maid now. You're not the lady of the house."
"What?" Kate snapped, losing whatever restraint she had left. "Sawyer, are you and her…"
Just as Desiree was processing what was happening, Sawyer suddenly draped his arm around her shoulders. She froze, saying nothing.
"I forgot to mention. This is my girlfriend, and the woman I plan to marry. I brought her home today so she could see the place."
He glanced at the maids. "From now on, call her Mrs. Burton when she's here."
The maids hurried to respond. "Yes, Mr. Burton! Nice to meet you, Mrs. Burton."
Desiree didn't even crack a smile.
Tears welled in Kate's eyes, and her face drained of color. "How… How dare you…"
Proud as Kate was, how could she accept something like this?
Sawyer had betrayed her. He had completely ignored her feelings and done it so brazenly.
She forced a bitter laugh.
Sawyer had never truly intended to marry her.
"If you want to marry someone else, fine. I can sign the divorce papers. But you didn't have to humiliate me like this." Kate swallowed hard, trying not to break in front of them.
"Divorce?" Sawyer shook his head. "You're overthinking. You're married to me now, so you might as well just stay here."
Kate frowned. "What do you mean? Are you trying to imprison me? That's against the law!"
"Think about what you've done. Are you really in the position to talk about the law?" Sawyer took a seat. "Now, go cook. I'm not repeating myself again."
Kate was stunned by Sawyer's gaze.
Every ounce of love she had for Sawyer had twisted into pure hatred as she wrestled with the chickens.
Tears streamed down her face.
She'd been nothing but true to Sawyer, yet he'd been manipulating and deceiving her the whole time.
It was Sawyer who had betrayed her!
"Sawyer Burton, whoever you are, I'm not going to let this slide!" she thought to herself.
Even George couldn't do anything to her. So she figured that Sawyer, a newcomer with no roots or backing in Draventh, would never dare to kill her.
If she ever got the chance to escape, she would make him pay for every insult and shred of humiliation she had suffered.
After flailing several times and suffering countless pecks, she finally caught that damned chicken. She wanted to tear its head off just to vent her fury.
As she stepped out of the coop, she froze. Her entire body shivered.
In the back garden of the neighboring villa stood a man and a woman—one standing, the other crouching.
Rhea wore a pristine dress, and her long hair flowed in the wind. She smiled lightly as she watched George crouched on the ground planting something.
